petrol pump, click-click

petrol pump, click-click
84 RR, if I turn the ignition on the petrol pump doesn't stop clicking, I'm told is a possible air leak ?
Also would this give a lack of power on take off, and in top gear (5th) on the open road, it runs smooth. It runs good and has pick up in all gears but on the open road I need to keep changing down to 4th.
Sucking an extreme amount of gas
Running out of ideas for this problem. I've never had a vehicle with a motor that stuffed that it wont cruise on the open road. The motor doesn't run prefect clean (it is an 84) but it seems to run cleaner than my 87.
Its not the advance retart, I've checked that.
I know nothing about these things yet
All ideas appreciated

Its an 84 carb model. I purchased it in poor condition, steering box wouldnt hold oil it was leaking that bad, broken front axle, and a bunch of other stuff. I dont think its had any maintainance for quite some time, or it might be more honest to say its been abused, but it has some good stuff on it and could be a good truck again. Apart from a lack of power and the rear diff head having tape around it for some reason (poor attempt to stop a leak I think), it is in better condition than my 87
If you turn the ignition on (but dont start the car) you can hear the fuel pump continually clicking. I'm kinda hoping this is my problem. If the fuel pump is sucking air then I'm hoping that would mean a lack of fuel to the carbs, which in turn would mean a lack of power.
It could all be hopeful wishing. Dont want to just keep pulling it to bits in the hopes I will fix it.
I purchased this thing with the problem, so I have no idea if its just happened or not. Wish I had owned it when the problem 1st started then I would have more idea what it is.

Hey mate
Ive got a 84 as well its got a fuel pump jus before the rear rh wheel its electric and it clicks but i got all the farkin power in da world. Im not sure if mine actually came wif it (not sure if it iz stock) but mines carbie petrol and gas and has great fuel economy(for a rr lol) but i think it might be mech if it iz get it changed.( cnt be that hard mines hooked up and it doesnt look dat hard to do lol) plus wat iz ya dizzy set at ( mines set at 15 degrees accordding to the harm balancer which isnt true the harm balncer isz way wrong on mine ) try that should have sharp accelation then if ya do. But also remeber its only 3.5 so dnt expect great performance (dats if itz stock ).
It also could be blown head gasket check ur compression on all cyd's to make sure cos wen i bought mine it had the same prob's no farkin power and crusin was shockin ay fuel (cos it wasnt on gas then i put it on after i rebuilt the top of the motor lol) was real bad it was bout 20 litres per 100kms no matter wat i did.
Let me know wat happens ok pm me
Cheers az

Just took it out for the 1st time in weeks since it failed a warrant on a couple of small things, its running nice. I even dropped it into top gear at about 90k and it seems to have good power, wouldn't say it has great pick up in 5th, but it had pick up. Cant really test it around here, firstly because I have no rego or warrant, second cos its all 50k area. The 2 1/2 inch exhaust kinda lets every-one know I'm coming, cops included.
I'm not 100% sure that its running any different as its been a few weeks since I've driven it, but it does feel like its got heaps of grunt and all I've changed is the coil lead. Might just pay up the $100 and put new spark plug leads on it and see what that does. I've already had them off and tested, they weren't the best, but they said it wouldnt cause the lack of power problems, but I'm not sure that I have a lack of power now.
My trailor is sitting out in the drive with about a ton of sand on it, might just connect that up and see what happens.
Not sure whats happening with the petrol consumption at this stage.
Theres all sorts of things on this truck that I dont have a clue about, it used to be some-ones pride and joy. Theres clear plastic pipes from the dizzy, one of them goes to what looks like a thin copper pipe thats rapped around the mamifold, not sure where the other one goes (bad memory). Theres extra steering dampers, and all sorts of little things. Shame the last guy that owned it didnt appreciate what he had.
