My patrol needs a new clutch, i think its just the thrust bearing or throwout bearing in it, should I pay a shop to do it or do it myself? anytime I think ill just do it myself I always regret it!!

if its the same box as td42 id get a transmission place to do it unless u can get hold of a transmission jack cause they are very heavy, i did my own clutch with a trolley jack and heaps of timber, wasnt much fun ;)

if u have heavy lifting tools ie a hoist and forklift to hold box go for it, otherwise its not much fun at all, but in sayin that i did mine myself and would never pay someone to do it

with the tools you have it might be easier to pull the motor out. i've just done mine that way and was failry straight foward s

Pulling the engine is my no1 choice even with a gear box jack
as it is a fu$king heavy box which is hard to balance on a
gearbox jack plate as the box slips off it

Just pay the money and get it done.

second that, pulling out the motor is quite easy.
Other wise you will need a good transmission jack and lots of patience

i'd only use a trans jack if had a hoist aswell. if you had access to a hoist and gearbox jack then that'd be much easier than engine out. if you can afford it just pay some muppet to do it and it'll be done in a day instead of a weekend for pulling the motor out and mucking around with that :)

very true, i was lucky i had access to a hoist and we needed the forklift to drop the box out, would never do it with the car sitting on the ground

Helped a mate in the driveway useing only a trans jack it was that heavy that it spun and was a pain in the arse etc etc. Hense 12mths later i needed mine done it went to a shop.

Well 2 weeks ago did my mates patrol TB42 clutch and it took us about 6 hrs out and in found it pretty easy and this was in his garage on the floor, and last weekend split the box from the block and sealed it with silicon and that took 1 1/2 hrs if you have 2 inch body lift it is very easy...

must haves.

2 2500kg trolley jacks.
2 people.
compressor and air tools.
and jack the car as high up as possible.

I've tried it both ways and pulling the engine was a LOT easier than dropping the box. But that was doing it on my own both times.

Yeah thanks for the help guys, I sorta figured that it would be a prick to do and even though im an auto elec and doing trade upgrade to diesel mech n have some mechanical talent I know when its a good idea to hand ball something!! ill just pay someone I think!!

Ive done mine on my own by slipping an engine crain through the LH front door and lifting it up through the hole where your gear sticks come out of very easy and quick to do by your self. I used tree trunk protector to sling it as its wide and helps level it up to slip nicely on the dowels.
