G.day,
iv got a 2000 model GU which seems to have alot of what feels like backlash in the rear diff.while driving if you acelerate and then back off you can feel and hear a slight clunk/thud in the rear diff. iv checkted the tailshaft uni's, gearbox output ect all ok. i had i diff out on the weekend thinking it was the backlash in the diff, but it was also ok. while i had the diff out i checkted the splines on the axles which seemed to be fine as well. does anyone know if there is anything inside the differental itself which could be worn?? i.e LSD clutch packs which would cause this feeling/ sound.

I had the same problem and it ended up being shot lower controll arm bushes.
I put repco bushes in and they lasted one trip, so i replaced them with nissan bushes and havent had a problem.

Just buy a triton. You know thats what Turbo would tell you so maybe thats the cure. Lol

thanks for the reply mate but im pretty sure its not the control arm bushes because the free play is still noticeable when the axle is jackted up, tailshaft unbolted and you turn a wheel backa nd forth.

what size tyres are you running as my backlash feels heeps worse when i run 35s when compared to my 31s due to the difference in the length in the radius of the tyre.

I'd say it's your gearbox.
Is there any difference in mechanical sound when the clutch is pressed compared to released?

thanks for the reply but as said above it is still noticable with tailshaft unbolted and rear wheeels jackted up.

Pull the cetre and measure the backlash, often with the axles in you are feeling the slack in the side gears as well and not the actual backlash, this can feel worse with large tyres due to their added weight.
