Pyro Gauges - anyone tried this one?
HI guys,
im keen to get a pyro, but dont like spending much money.
found this one from the states in digital (which can display in celcius) inc sensor and shipping down under for about $80 aussie.
any thoughts?

Most pyros use K type thermocouples which don't need calibration. But they do need the proper connectors to get an accurate reading.Mark2 wrote:Looks good and so does the price. I agree the probe is a bit short for a 3" dump pipe.

Also, it looks like its designed to be panel mounted - mounting might be an issue for some.

As its an industrial temperature controller does it have a provision for dimming the display at night ? With LED's getting them bright enough during the day makes them far too bright at night IMO.

Funny that!! I thought the gauge would be bigger but it's no drama and will make it easier to mount. I have a GPS mounted from the grab handle on the "A" piller and plan to mount it under that. I'll post a pic when it's in.

The gauge arrived and its now fitted. First impressions are - its great!
Its extremely responsive, has a programmable alarm and can be dimmed with a button press for night use or also set up to dim with lights on. Can also be set up to trip an external buzzer on alarm. Even though the display is small, its really easy to read. I much prefer it to an anlogue gauge for this purpose.
I wasnt sure if the ferrule for the dump pipe is stainless so didnt try to weld it in, however after drilling a hole in the dump pipe, it made its own thead and screwed in just fine.
Only problem is, my EGT's might be a bit high now - it will hit 540 in about 10 seconds at full throttle up a longish hill which isnt that steep.....Rather than detune it, will just have to drive by the gauge. I think my fuel consumption is about to improve......

540 isn't that hot unless it's after the turbo and you're running a lot of boost.
Its in a GQ TD42 - about 2" post turbo. Non intercooled, no boost gauge but one is one the way. I've fitted a turbotech boost controller (can just lift the gate valve by blowing through it) at a very rough guess, it might be 12 lbs give or take 3 lbs!
I've just come back from a longer test drive, it sits on about 280 -320 @ 110km/h and 175 at warm idle.
It hit 550 at 160 km/h (under controlled conditions of course). To get it over 500 you need to put the boot into it (not normal driving) so am thinking I will just drive by the gauge and only go over 500 for short bursts.
