I have 2h diesel (standard 4.0L - no turbo) in an 87 Toyota Landcruiser Troopy, and have blown 2 oil filters in the last 2 weeks - litterally oil filter splits and spirts it out everywhere!!
I have replaced with 3 different oil filters (getting good times on changes now hehehe) including a genuine toyota part.
When it starts - at idle it is sitting about 1/4 - 1/2 way on pressure gauge then goes off the dial within a few seconds, most of the time the engine cuts out within 5 seconds (if it does start).
Had a mechanic look at the motor for a bit and he says the internals of the motor are fine and that the issue is with the oil pressure relief valve/s.
The old one that was pulled out from near the oil filter - the spring looked like it had been considerably shortened either by grinder or something similar.
R&R of spring from housing (then reassemble) and pressure goes back to normal for a few seconds then off the dial again.
Got the mechanic a little stumped as well as myself....
Anyone experienced this or know what is going on???

2h diesel motor - blowing oil filters

You have two pressure relief valves. One in the oil filter housing, the other in the front timing cover. They wear and get stuck. So they cant control oil pressure. You will find it will be the one in the timing cove that is causing the problems.

can someone point me in the direction of where to find these oil pressure relief valves... & what they look like??? I kno one is around the oil filter housing somewhere and one in/on the front housing as well but no idea what they look like.
Mine is running that when startin the engine cold, the guage will sit at the 1/3 mark then when at normal running temps the guage drops to the low mark or just below it.

When in doubt..... UTE-ERIZE it!!!
