89-97 lux front door speakers

HI guys,

Time to make some music!

Do 6 inch speakers fit in the front door panels of the lux? any issues with window winders etc hitting covers.

If not do people currently use a decent 4 inch speaker they would recommend?

There are plenty of decent 4" speakers around... However you will never get any bottom end out of such a small speaker.

As for fitting 6" I can't help you. Mate of mine who had a 4Runner chucked 6x9's in the bottom-front corner of the door with one of those spacers... Seemed to work for him.

Go to your local Strathfield or JB Hi-Fi and talk to them about it. More often than not they'd tell you how they'd go about doing it. Then you just buy your speakers and go home and fit them yourself!

Yeah, I hear you about lack of bottom end in 4 inches, I used to be a little stereo crazy and wasted alot of money on 'big' systems. I do all my own installs etc no problems, the main query is wether or not any one has had any issues fitting the 6 inchers as I have had some cars being painful in the past.

But them 6x9s in the back should take care of some bottom end and the 4 inchers might be ok for the top end.

as far as im aware if youve got quarters youre set for putting a 6x9 in there if you want to. the width of the quarter down the height of the door is empty-youve just got the actual depth of the door to worry about.

quarter windows, some people call them quarter lights, im not sure if youll have them, they are on the older cars. youll know if youve got them. Its like having 2 windows but one flips around on a piviot point and the other one is a normal one

Fair enough.

I've always gone with bigger in the back, smaller in the front just for the easy of install.

I've only got 4" in the front at the moment and it's driving me mad. As you, I am stereo crazy but in the way of big live audio setups so I like good sound.

I'm waiting to build my drawers up so I can chuck 6x9's and a sub in there!

6 inch speakers fully recessed and flush with the trim.

or how my doors are now,

6 inch speakers mounted the normal way.

Surface mounted was harder then the flush mount. By the time to allow room for the window winder, window tracks etc inside, the little door stopper that goes inside the door it doesn't leave much room for them. I think I had to trim a little off the door frame to get them exactly where I wanted them.

6x9's fit but they need spacers because of depth as already said. Replacing the 4" speakers in mine and my mates car was probably the best thing we've done so far haha

mate 6x9 fit in, u may have to cut the whole alitttle bigger but thats it.. no spacer needed.

hmmm maybe my mate and I got thicker speakers haha cause his 91-94 lux (cant remember exactly what year) and my 87 hilux both needed spacers as the back of speaker hit the outer wall in our doors. And yes hole has to be made bigger obviously.

I've put 6" Pioneer splits into the front of my '92 dual cab - and 6x9" in the rear doors.

You'll have to cut a little bit out of the door depending on the size of the magnet and the frame holding the cone and the magnet together (basically the bracing on the speaker) but it won't take much.

The most important thing I found was to get some mdf to use as bracing behind the door frame (I used 12mm). There should be enough room to avoid the window winder, window frame and hinge. It'll also provide a much better mount for the speaker (rather than screwing them into metal) and a better sound as a result. It'll also brace the door where you've removed metal.

The door frame actually has space for a tweeter above the window winder too, but you'll have to cut a hole in the door skin to put it in. Don't know if you're thinking of doing that though.

If you're using crossovers, there's space in the left and right kick panels for them to live.

mate i run kenwood 7x10's in my front doors on a 96 hilux. they fit no worries dont hit the window handle dont need any spacers they fit flush to the trim. i have some pics but i cant work out how to post them.

Thanks for the info guys, sounds like its time to start looking at which buggers to spend on then just make them fit.

I think a set of 6 in splits will do the job for the front - good tip on the tweeter spot in the trim, thanks

Im going to look at fitting 6X4 speakers into the normal position in the surf. Vertically it looks like it should fit (4 inch across, 6 high) just so that when the rear speakers are covered up there is a little bit more in it...
Anyone else tried this?

chuck sum splits in mate much better quality thats wat i did and i got 6x9's in the back... had to use spacers for 6x9s and grinded the door a bit

I used VR/VS door pods with map pocket to fit 6" speakers and looks factory.
