welding rear diff

Post by markil »

i've been thinking about getting my rear diff welded for a while now and i think i'll go ahead with it. but i've got a few questions for anyone that can answer them.
1. it's not a reverseable mod is it? i.e if i don't like it i'll have to replace the centre, right?
2. how much do people usually charge to do it?
i've read that diff places usually will do the job.
3. is there somewhere in the Penrith area or nearby, that someone has used with a good result?

P.S i'm only running 31's with a stock 1.3 engine.

DO IT! you'll love it.

i'm sure overkill engineering, m&m custom engineering, or even country-wide (a bit far thouh) would do it.

To answer the guys questions

1. Correct. Weld it and you cant go back (not a bad thing :D )
2. Dunno, but it's the cheapest traction you can buy

have a go at it yourself. zuks are only cheap if you do the work yourself! I welded my front diff a couple of weeks ago. do a search and someone has some pics and info.
after christmas I am welding and reconditioning my rear spare diff, ready for a straight swap and big effort at the NSW Jamboree. wherever it will be?
other than that I have no mods.
except
30x9.5x15
before then I will weld rear diff, longer shackles and a set of rockhoppers maybe. after that the rockhoppers will go into my LJ.

DO IT YOURSELF, or a mate!

do it yourself only if your confident in setting up your diff backlash (pretty easy) , and know how to weld ok, else youll just be pulling it out to replace a broken housing.

if you do it yourself weld some bolts or scrap steel between the planetary gears for extra strength , if unsure get someone else to do it and watch and learn and do the next one yourself.
if its worth doing do it intensly , better still do it with MADPASSION

set your limits way beyond your abilities

if i could weld myself i would do it, but unfortunately i can't. i'll look into getting a mate to do it for me. i searched but couldn't find any pictures that helped me. if someone knows of some pictures i'd like to see them though.
thanks guys.

I am thinking about giving this a go myself. Can you use regular 'ol flux core MIG wire to weld the diff? I think i've got 0.8 in there at the moment...

I assume crank the amps up a bit to get some heat into it :?:

Also, I think someone suggested welding in a few bits of scrap to help it hold together?

i think if you need to ask what to weld, then you should get someone to actually show you. or get a shop to do it. or get a spidertrax spool.
