60 series rear disc conversion ?

The Subaru calipers have a handbrake facility built into them, thats why they are used.

Just make sure you get the ones for the vented discs if you are going to use patrol discs.

yes 60 front hubs go on the rear but they are far from fitting.

Yes hilux front rotors and callipers fitted to the rear

So subaru do make a caliper that fits on the rear of some sort of subaru....
And this type of subaru is a leone or a brumby...right ?

What year brumby or leone ?
What size disc do they fit over (vented obviously larger) ?

No, the conversion uses Subaru Leone or Brumby FRONT calipers which come factory fitted with a hand brake facility, on the rear.

A brake caliper is a brake caliper, there is no front or rear, just how you use them.

The calipers used in the conversion are from around (I am not sure of the exact years) 84 - 89

the caliper that uses a vented disc is for an 18mm thick disc

A rear caliper on an 80 series is definitely different to the front !! I'm sure it's the same for a tonne of other cars...

Anyhow, what you are saying is that the calipers being used are'nt the rear calipers (off a subaru with the hand brake facility) therefore you must provide your own hand braking system ie a tail shaft brake ?

OR

Does the front caliper off the subaru have some sort of unused linkage that is meant for a handbrake cable ?..

Are they off the back of the leone or the front of the leone, the reason I ask is that I spoke to wrecker today and he said they aren't vented and aren't anywhere near big enough to fit an 18mm rotor between them. Is he full of it?

The conversion uses Subaru FRONT calipers, mounted on the rear.

The subaru FRONT calipers have a hand brake mechanism in them.

The conversion does NOT use Subaru REAR calipers.

Sorry for my annoying messages, but it just seems a bit weird that the front brakes have a hand brake mechanism in them...

When these calipers are on the leone, does the handbrake function from the FRONT end ...?

After spending the last 2 hours trying to find some info on the net about the strange occurance of the 'front end handbrake', I found it...WOT THE.... I would never of guessed this was the setup !!
Anyhow thanks for the patience and I hope now that I can do this conversion aswell.

Whats the best way people have found to setup the handbrake cable. What combination of parts are needed.

Ive been doing rear coversion on 40's, 60's and 75's for 20 years now. I used various car calipers but the car size calipers had small pistons compared to the crusier brakes. I found the pads would wear out very quickly and not have enought braking force because cruiser's have fairly large bore master cylinder to suit the front caliper's ( 4 piston ) calipers so the rear caliper needs to be compatible. Also the cruiser disc's are larger than car sized disc's so the car calipers dont fit the cruiser disc properly and the pads are relativly small also. I made up kits to use Hilux solid disc's and caliper's with a bolt on brackets. The only mod is to the disc rotor bore and its a full bolt up conversion. Ive been getting all the parts Lazer cut for some years and have them ready to go. The set up i used requires the handbrake from the FJ47 and the handbreak is done.

I'm in the middle of this whole conversion and looks that it will probably work. I bought some FRONT calipers off a Subaru Brumby, which suprisingly have the handbrake on them (for those who were like me and didn't know that some of the old suby's ran the handbrake off the front end, now you do).
I've drawn up a couple of things in Solidworks that I will get laser cut soon. The parts that I am using reinforce the end of diff housing stud holes (4 of em') which require welding to the housing. The actual caliper bracket bolts to the setup and is removable.
The caliper bracket can't reach all 4 diff housing holes to bolt to (unless you weld two parts together ->?), so I've utilised the three holes that the bracket can reach and added another 3 holes between them that simply bolt to the reinforced part that has been welded to the diff housing.

I can't guarantee this will work because I have'nt done it yet, I also can't guarantee that this will be engineerable or safe. But if anyone wants the *.dxf files for cnc/laser cutting/water jet etc, I can email them to you.

PS. As Wally said, the pads don't fit entirely on the 60 front disk, the top of the pad sits about 3 - 5mm from the top of the disk. I am using a 60 front disk on the rear with the 60 front hub aswell. I still need to design spacers for the outer axle part.

This will be the weak link, cruisers are already known for breaking rear studs.

The outer spacer thingy will probably be made out of thick walled pipe (Seamless), and I'm going to do the stud size upgrade. I'm going to laser cut some 10mm to get the correct stud pattern and use it to drill the holes in the pipe. The pipe length only needs to be 20mm in which will contain the thread which will continue into the origrinal part of the hub. Oh yes, I'm welding it on too.
