Mitsubishi thoughts
Mitsubishi thoughts
Been searchen around on the forum looken at all the differant engine swaps people have been doin, but couldnt find nyone with any 4g series motors made by mitsubishi.
Why not? if this is a dumb Q im sorry not that mechanicaly minded as have no experiance at 16 yrs but just tryen to think of the cheapest power upgrade for the tired 1ltr strugglen on the highway pushen 31's.
The 4g series motors seem to be quite common so wouldnt imagine thered be any problem picken one up cheap.
So has nyone had ny experiance with them?
cheers

I think you will find the reason is they are pretty much mounted east west in the Evo's and what not where as the SR20DE's and DET's can come from your Silvias and 180's which are rear wheel drive North west setup, allowing for a gear box and engine swap meaning only a jack shaft to the transfer case would be needed. Where as the 4G would need a different gear box to start with a bell housing adapter to suite and many other mods. Also the pickup such as intake and what not are on the back of the engine where the fly wheel would be also making things hard to setup in a Sierra. Then there is things like the exhaust side the SR20's follow the same side as a Sierra 1.3 would the 4G motor isn't. So there is many reasons but I think the main thing is which is easier.
..wrench, wheel, wreck repeat..

4G is out of Lancer isn't it.. EG: 4G32.
A mate had a 80? model with one with a 5 speed behind it.
Seemed to go OK but they are old now, they were all cast iron (heavy) and the gearboxes are quite long meaning you'll have to lose the jackshaft(yoke to flange with one uni) and/or move the transfer.
The exhaust is on the drivers side too which will be a problem.
As has been said a hundred times... not worth the hassle..
just fit a Vitara 1.6 or Baleno 1.6 or even G13B out of Jimny.
These motors are all alloy and bolt straight in (with adaptor kit).
4G32.

it's been done a thousand times before and will be done a thousand times after get your hands on a wrecked or write off 22R 4wd solid axle hilux and swap it all over of course its gonna be a mission but there are companys that make conversion kits for it and best of all theres bucket loads of yotas which means cheap,
but for a simple and cheap power upgrade then the 1.3 or 1.6lt path is the way to go

Hay J-top
I got me a starion and its dam skippy fun!
The moter in them is a POS tho and i am saving the pennies for a 4g63 from a VR4
Dakota
My advice to you is unless you have a MAJOR bank ballance, a lot of tiem and heaps of knoledge follow dont lead.
I spent 4 years and too much mondy trying to turn my Jtop into a rock crawler and then bought a Zook that kicked its ass for less than the cost of fixing the Pajs diff.
The big thing is befor youspend any $$ plan two steps ahead, if you are goign to upgrade the engine make sure its goign to be big enough for all your plans. Oh and EFI rocks!!!

I put a 4g63 in a 81 sierra back in the late eightys. I used the 2litre siruis motor out of a mitsubishi van and the 5speed box to suit.
the motor and box fitted well with no cutting of the body.
The bueaty of this conversion is that the gearbox is very short so that a decent length jackshaft is retained, the downside is being a van gearbox you need to make up a shifter to suit
I used an all aussie 4spd shifter with a minor mod to adapt to 5spd
The radiator was also a holden 6 cyl item from the 70s
The conversion was reliable , not bad on fuel(11 l/100k) and fairly quick
The 4g63 turbo motor in the REX might also fit ,but harder to do because of the EFI wiring ,, I just used a weber carby on mine.
let me know if any quetions,
PS I dont check this site everyday
