mate can't go past mid 89 to mid 97 lux's LN series (diesel's) no race car but if you can get away with it on your rules a turbo will do wonders and should still be under the power limit your allowed you'll have a blast in it.

Any Lux is a good Lux :P

I would go looking for an Extra or a Dual Cab, I love my single but there is no room to carry anything in the cab it all das to be strapped to the back

I dunno about that, but I love my petrol Hilux.. And it gets going in traffic pretty quick. Also goes good off road, climbs most stuff without much revving.

Might pay to get pump injectors checked and valve clearances done (should be done every 40 thou?) my lux will hold 1st gear line lock on 31 10.5 with locker on bitumen just doesn't like 2nd and haven't tried it on 35's yet  it was plenty fast enough in traffic alot of the petrol ones i drive at work are about the same if not slower than mine was and i've driven turbo ones with less go than no turbo one so it comes back to matenance. Don't forget don't buy a IFS one so that rules out a extra cab or sr5.

This may be of help....

Solid Axle Suspesion:

IFS:

I hear alot of Hilux/4Runner owners may have alot of CV shafts and CV boots constantly breaking when offroad when they have IFS, but I'm no expert.

I have a YN65 1984 model which has been updated to a 2.4 Diesel. I would go up against any 1984 to 1988 petrol ute any day. With or without a load on the back. I go everywhere up, down, across and through. I guess it could be just the diff combination.

Dunno about everyone else but I love the visibility in my dual cab, heaps better than my mates single cab.

a diesel turbo does not apply, if it is diesel it is apparently not classed as high powered as far as i no, thought id let you know.

Exactley right.

You can have a 1000hp twin turbo V8 as long as it's a diesel while you're on your P's.

the toyota 2l and 3l engines arent popular for their brute horsepower, but they are for reliability and being a toyo diesel will just go and go and keep going long after a petrol engine has stopped. on the road my 2.4d is gutless but im glad cos i dont get speeding tickets. non turbo diesel will not be as responsive as a turbo diesel.
