Thinking of getting a 4Runner and have found this one.....



It's an 85 model (solid front )
has 2L 4Y motor
290,000 km on the clock
6 months rego
31's with 3 inch lift
wants $4000 for it....

Any comments?
I know they use a 4Y in forklifts is this the same motor??
(easy gas conversion)
does it have enough go?? have heard they are under powered??
Is there a cheap/easy motor upgrade if so what and what kind of $$$?
lastly does anyone know the truck???
Good or Bad responces please.....
Anything I should check for??

I have an 87' lux pretty much the same.
I don't know about other peoples experience with the 4y engine but mine has been awesome. If its like mine that engine still has a lot of klms left in it. as for being gutless . . well yes but I don't think they are as bad as people say my car can still beat the occasional old car and quicker than my mates diesel
Engine upgrades I've been looking at for mine are the 22r not a huge power increase but supposed to be a good engine.
The commo v6 which needs an adapter plate.
Or the 3rzfe, which is a huge power and torque increase and apparently just a bolt in engine that all it needs is the engine mounts moved.
Not really sure of dollar value for swaps tho.

Test drive it might be stuff wrong with it that you can knock the price down on (clutch, starter and bearings).

I would get a 60 series before that, I have had two mates with these sorts of trucks & they have been horible gutless things, my old man has a 2wd version & it used more fuel than it should.

Hard to start when hot, badly prone to fuel vapourisation & oil consumption but they do seem to do a lot of km having said that.

You would even get a GQ for that price & the fuel consumption wouldnt be much different.

Maybe I have been lucky and have a good engine, but mine actually starts a bit smoother when hot.
Also oil seems to last ok in my car.
Fuel consumption in mine seems to be on average around 380 klms a tank (45L)
And I run premium fuel about once a month which keeps the carby cleaner than normal.

You would even get a GQ for that price

And they have coils which would be nicer for ride comfort.

But each to their own with looks.

Another thing, not too sure how this would change power but I have the air conditioning belt disconnected (not even sure if 85 model came with air con) but I find the quarter glass windows awesome.

Having a second look at the picture I think you might want to have a quick check underneath the car for rust and or broken rubber seals on things. Kind of looks like they have just spray painted some things black and silver. Not too sure tho.

Looked at a 60 good truck but very heavy, hungry on fuel, & more $ to rego..

Very hard to get a GQ for that price up here, otherwise would have considered..

my old man has a 2wd lux with the 4y engine in it, its bloody great, its reliable, pulls hard, has good torque low down. it isnt fast, but its faster than diesels of the same era. its a good engine IMHO
