Ok guys i having my sierra engineered for the 1.6 soon and i got a spool in the rear. car needs to do a speedo check drive with engineer as the passanger. I not sure what to do about the spool, i have a lock right sitting in a box which i was going to put in the front one day. Also thinking i need to do bearings and brakes pretty soon anyhow.

any ideas or incite would be appreciated.

take it out and have both ends open , fix your brakes and do the bearings before the test. Don't have anything on there that could be a reason to fail

Cut a hole in your bonnet and have stacks coming straight out the top and mount the pod filter out the other side of the bonnet and leave the spool in Engineers love that sh#t..... :D Fit some Neon lights too for extra effect....lol

But seriously what everyone else said, but it wouldnt hurt putting the locker in the front as you wont be wheeling it with the engineer anyway, otherwise make it as clean and reliable as possbile for the big day.......... :cool:

I love swimming against the tide so I'm going to suggest that if you are driving (and you know your car) and the engineer is only a passenger then leave the spool in place.
I base this opinion on my car which has a spool fitted also.
It was very noticeable with 31x10.5 BF Goodrich AT's but you wouldn't know it's there with the Silverstone MT117's. I think because the lugs have enough flex.

If you go this way (not that is is a bad idea) make sure you dont have squealing tyres during the test. Usually engineers are only concerned with approving the mods they have to, i.e. if you are getting approval for a spoa the engineer is not going to care about you having aftermarket lights fitted.

if the engineer picks up there is a spool, he's going to look harder at everything else....don't take the risk.

having just made my zuk legal, take the diffs back to stock!!!

Mine was welded and there was no way theyd pass that, so i put an ARB air locker in the rear of mine, but didnt install the compressor or switches till after it was all inspected and approved - purely because i didnt want them asking questions about it.

Check your speedo with a GPS first to make sure its bang on, tighten your steering box to eliminate any play, make sure it doesnt pull to one side too much if you let go of the wheel and make sure the wheel is in the straight ahead postion when going straight. All these things i had brought up at my first inspection =)

If theyre brake testing or whatever you could lock the front hubs in to slow down faster too.

thanks for all this guys. think i will just take it back to open. was looking for a slack option but want the best chances of passing for the least amount of $$$ because as a student my time has no value. lol

How does having the hubs locked help you slow down quicker? :?

I would have thought the extra momentum of axles, centre & driveshaft spinning would exert more load on the brakes and actually INCREASE your stopping distance.

Hahahaha maybe your front diff is shagged lol.

But seriously the friction of the diff and axles splines and oil etc would probably offset the extra inertia momentum anyway.
