J18A or G16B

Post by Heath.Davis »

Had a quick look in the bible and couldnt find anything on the viability of the J18A vs G16B. I am after a quick answer as to whether the cost and hassle of mounts, parts etc is worth it.

Can get a G16B for half the price of the J18A, is the price diference really worth it? Or is the balance of the cost better spent on extractors etc? I guess if the J18A dies it will cost a small fortune to replace but thought I would just test the waters and see what the general concensus was.

Cheers,

On the flip side... if you are prepared to go the J18, why not go the J20???? Same conversion, and actually worth the extra effort over and above the G16b....

Exactly. the J18 is pointless - all the same work as a J20 (actually more, as the J20 already comes in a RWD format, the J18 doesn't)

So really, it's J20/G16.

I think the G16 does all you'd need in a sierra, J20's are a fair bit more work and won't work with an engine fan.

I'm a bit iffy on the engine fan anyway. Sure they move alot of air, but a better radiator anf big thermo should do the same really. plus you have the option of turning the fan off for water crossings and not chopping the chit out of your radiator

Fair enough, I'm yet to see a car with a thermo NOT overheat, so I'm biased.

Alot of the V8 guys run clutch fans because they can't keep them cool on thermos, but I've never had an issue. I ran my v6 crummydore motor in the zook with the standard commy radiator and thermos an it only overheated once when the switch overloaded and shorted out the fan

G16 will be half the price to buy and quarter of the price to fit.

My fan experiences are from drift and circuit racing cars, the stock fan with shroud extracts air from the whole core better in most cases. If you're going to run thermos you need to shroud them effectively to work well.

Not generally true. J20's can be had quite cheap because they don't fit anything except quite new vitara's and GV's - there very little "swap" market.

Fitting will be a much bigger headache though.

I've seen prices for J20's well under the normal price for G16's.

Re thermos and sierras - a 14" single thermo is the biggest you can fit on a sierra radiator and even well shrouded, set up as a puller and cooling less than 80hp, It still got hot.

I have the same setup with a 4 blade 1.0 mechanical fan in my car and it won't get hot.
That's my experience.

Sorry should've mentioned it was going in a vitara Swb.

I've gone with the G16 just for ease of fitting and the cost of replacement parts if/when I break something. just gave me more options for spares etc than going with a conversion (not to metion hassles with cooling systems etc. This is not a DD and will be a trailer queen between the garage and trials events.

X 2 .. Thermos suck.
There is really no substitute for a properly shrouded engine driven fan.
An electric clutch(temp controlled) would be nice though.

steve's right!...thermos suck! as for the engine...go for the g16b.....you can choose trannies.....as the auto runs a seperate comp. if you by a j20 manual...you will always be stuck with it unless you completely re-wire it for an auto. j20's have reliabilaty issues also, they are very sensitive to lack of oil changes and are famous for siezing heads and shitting cranks. hey!....what about an h20 v6?....would be nice with an auto :P ....going to go like the clappers in my 2wd lj rod!

Bwahahahaha you're not looking very hard are you.

As an example, my commy can sit on about 6000rpm in ones spot for long enough to bust a set of tyres in 3rd gear, and doesn't even get a little hot and it runs AU falcon twin thermos.

Try and get twin AU thermos on a sierra though.

Yes, I know that 99% of new cars fun thermos and don't overheat.

I'll rephrase my response. I'm yet to see a 4WD with thermo's fitted in place of a stock shrouded mechanical fan not overheat.

Has anyone tried the flexalite thermo fan available from lowrange?

I won't comment on engine transplant victims, but my Sierra with standard G13B is too cold with its 14" thermo fan (puller, no other fans). It only overheated once since fitted, and that was due to my crappy wiring  .

That said my father had a 12" thermo on his stocko for some time, and it was inadequate in the bush.

Is there a members thread or something for this? I want to know more :P .
