Post by zook4fun »

has any one ever have the rear drive shaft housing from the trans case crack? happened to my mates car last night, lost the oil and heated up the box till smoke was coming from the breather pipe( didn't notice because he was behind me and we were still on the road :) ) when we stopped

is it a common thing for the housing to crack? any ideas on where to get another one? i'm preety sure its a 2002 model

'allo gadies and lentlemen. First time post, and for all the wrong reasons. Bare with me whilst I explain the situation.

I do believe this is my '99 Wranglier zook4fun has referenced. I inherited it with 50 mm or so lift along with the obligatory cracked fanimold. It looks like it was twisted apart, like a role of b-wipe.

So, I don't think the xfer case is bung as it may just be leaking fluid (gasket?), which may well have been dropping sideways on to something hot like the exhaust (or myself, but that's another story). I am yet to find the source of this fluid.

It looks like the rear diff has broken something (bearings?), because it's leaking fluid from at least two area's. One, onto the left axle (from the rear), and the second on to the rear d-shaft. There's also probably a mm of give in this rear d-shaft, and probably 2-3mm give in the f-shaft. Might explain some possible cracks and broken biddies in the rear diff, and possibly the front soon to if the 'give' is not supposed to be there.

The transmission fagging out rather than the smoke was what actually gave away something was wrong. The transy has since gone back to its usual self, but only as long as I keep the trips short, and don't rev to high, otherwise it begins to fail again. No smoke though (probably all burned out
!). Just a burning metal smell :x

Appreciate your commentry. I'll enjoy them whilst sinking some well-deserved Stella's because I'm not going anywhere :D
