Help needed- Gen 1 Paj
Hey all
just need some help with two things on my NE swb Paj
its a turbo diesel model imported in 2000.
i have just sold my tyres, which where 31 simex extreme trekkers, and now am on the mission to find new tyres asap. just wondering would 33's be fine? i have changed the diff gears to 4.8** from 4.6**. also what offset rims are best, and is a body lift essential??
also does anyone know of a form of locker available for a gen 1 paj 4.8s?? have been looking around the net but havent found anything.
cheers matt

hey mate,
so you have a gen 1 paj as well...... ok where do i start..... the original tyres that were on a gen 1 paj was a 29.... when i first got mine i put a 35 on that went straight on but you couldnt turn..... my gen 1 paj has 4.875 diff ratios as standard.... for a paj you could go a lokka lock-rite front diff lock with manual hubs and for the back a detroit or an arb air locker... but i run 33x12.50xr15 on my one with a 3 inch body.... i didnt have to do such a big bodylift but was plannin on runnin 35's off road.... you might find it a bit sluggish driving around town with 33's on as well.... what brand of tyre were you plannin on runnin??? a tyre that you could use for highway use as well as weekend offroading??? or a tyre like a mud terrain which does both but doesnt like the road much....
anyways if you need more help just pm me....

Nice offer, and the intent is understood, but the whole point of a public discussion forum is to discuss things in public.dans-paj92 wrote:anyways if you need more help just pm me....
If you do all the question & answer stuff here (in public) more people can learn - and you may find more people with answers, too.
ive decided to probably go down to a 32 maxxis bighorn, simply as i will be using it around town as well, and dont wanana stand out too much and use to much fuel. but am still undecieded. im eagerly awaiting my tax cheque( only like 2 months away) to lock hte front, move and flip rear shocks and get some sliders, until hten ill jsut debate and be undecided on what tyres.
is it hard to change a cv on the paj???
havent really looked at it in too much detail, and want to learn to do it myself so i dont get stuck in hariy postions wihtout 4wd as i have in the past
help is muchly appreciated
cheers matt

I think you'll fint the 32" tyres a good comprimise.
I run 33" tyres on my import with 4.9 diffs and 2" suspension lift.
It goes alright once the turbo comes on but uses a $hitload of fuel.
I think the ARB locker in the rear has a * notice may not fit rear of diesel import vehicles*
Someone needs to take the plunge and pay ARB to check if it will fit (cost around $500) to take a look!
The auto lockers are another option.

to change a cv on a gen 1 paj it is very easy.... first take the tyre off, take off the hub, take off the brake assembly, the front brake rotor should then slide off, undo the 3 balljoints, the steering knuckle should then slide off, depending on what side ( the passenger side you can just pull off because it is a circlip but the drivers side you have to undo 4 bolts to get the cv off ) then you have your cv and shaft. I broke my passenger side cv not long ago and it was cheaper for me to get mine reconditioned than buying a second hand one from a wrecker...

also if you have auto free wheeling hubs change them to manual hubs, because if you do break another cv joint you can undo the hub and continue with 3 wheel drive...
anyways just a suggestion...
