Rims 15" or 16"

Post by MereMale »

Just found out that we have a buckled rim on our 89 GQ.

Question is when getting some new rims would we be better getting 15 or 16" rims, as rig does 80% road and thinking of going from 31's to 33's as well.

Thanks in advanced.

You get a better load rating on your tyres with 16" rims.

15" gear cheaper, 16" gear better. That's the short answer, but for some off-road conditions I would say 15" can still be better.

I think for 80% road it's clear-cut though, go the 16" stuff if you can afford it. But both the rims and the tyres will cost a little more.
This is not legal advice.

Just adding to that, the 33" equivalent in a 16" rim is a 285/75/16 or 305/70/16.

Both tyres have the same rolling diameter but the 305 is 12.5 wide and 285 is 10.5 wide.

285 is actually just under 11.25" wide and 305 is 12" wide, to get 12.5" you need 315"s.

I think just get whatever you can get the best deal on.

16" are becoming more and more common, Ive had both and didnt notice any differance in performance.

I remember when passenger cars used 14" as standard, you wont find to many new cars or even up to about 10 year old cars with 14" rims
