can anyone tell me about the 2.8ltre diesel patrols what are they like any good or not
I know someone who has a GU and they used to tow a Yalta 555 (Boat) up the Gillies range and also to Marilian (dunno if that is right) and back no worries at all, then again i don't think it would like turnin 35's

Edit: also have a search, plenty of threads on 2.8 GU's recently.
If you're after a slightly less biased opinion, you're better off asking on patrol4x4.com.. everyone here is after powwwwaaarrrrr.. so they bag the 2.8's all the time.. it really depends what you're after and what you want the car to do. If you're not a lead foot and don't need to beat everyone off at the lights.. then a 2.8 is fine. A little slow till the turbo kicks in, but after that no probs..

98 GU.. front locker, cheezy sliders, 33's, winch etc.. .... long shopping list.

Agree, a mate of mine had one & it went ok, towed his boat well. Weak in the head though, he sold it after he blew the third head gasket. They have a smaller gearbox that the 4.2, his was also jumping out of third on decelleration so it needed a new slider and springs.mikmav wrote:If you're after a slightly less biased opinion, you're better off asking on patrol4x4.com.. everyone here is after powwwwaaarrrrr.. so they bag the 2.8's all the time.. it really depends what you're after and what you want the car to do. I would not say it was completely crap, while it has issues they are not as bad as the ZD30 or any Landcriuser diff/gearbox/cv issues.
Don't ask me, ask them. I'm just runnin for my life myself.
Well they are all following you...
No they ain't, I'm just in front...............

2.8
you want a 2.8 like you want herpes. 3 people i know who have asked me if they should buy one ( i sell parts) and i told them no way. 1 bought one anyway and it exploded 2 weeks later($4000-5000), another bought one and the turbo has sh.t itself twice in 6 months so he has sold it and the last one is still going o.k.
all the parts off them are not interchangable. eg turbos, pumps etc. just ring a 4x4 mechanic for more reasons. very prone to sh.tting front pulleys $200 2nd hand for a half descent one and heads. stick to main stream eng as there is normally a reason there is more around......

only the first roll hurts, then its a ride..
If ya got a realy low ks one for a realy good price it may be wirth it ,but they are prone to exploding due to the fact you have to drive them very hard to keep up with traffic. They dont have a big engine life compared to its bigger motor couzin. So if you get a low ks one and drive it nicely and cross your fingers and toes you may be ok. Have had a drive offroad and found it was very poor offroad under 3000rpm so it realy didnt suit me . Oh ya ,big bucks to rebuild, go the 4.2 litre if possible it is a far better rig if ya can get the extra money. Last thing the resale on them is very poor because you need to find someone with very serious mental issues to buy one ,hope this helps
wish list (lockers,lift,endless air,winch,bar,spotties,35s,paint job,turbo,18yrs old hottie
I found the 2.8Litre GQ nicer to drive. It went through the gears nicer. It had just as much power as the 4.2 when it was on turbo which was most of the time.
In low range in the bush I had to gun it up a very steep hill so I wouldn't get off turbo but sometimes it just didn't have enough go however I always seemed to make the hill climb but it may have taken another attempt and more speed.
Fuel economy was better with the 2.8L.
If you don't plan to do very steep hill climbs and start up a hill from a dead stop then she drives just as hard and fast as a 4.2L. I need low down power so I wouldn't buy one again.
I can't comment on longevity.

Have seen 1/2 a dozen or so throught the workshop, 2 blown gearboxes, 2 siezed engines and 2 cracked/throw away heads. I bought a GU with 2.8 blown engine and not going into 1st gear for 3k(it had a turbo 12 months ago), its nearly a TD42 T now. They have a small gearbox, small engine, small tailshaft but it is a big vehicle.
In driving they are hazardous untill they get to 2500 rpm, very poor when turning off a side street into traffic but acceptable once going and under boost.
I'd suggest getting the TD42.

we fitted a TD42 with aftermarket turbo inplace of the RD28, we are still running the RD28 tail shafts and to this date no problems, they have been in there for 18months and no dramas, stool wrote:Has anyone ever first hand broke the 2.8t tailshafts ?????
we did this the keep thje rockhopper transfer case in place, we just put a TD42 box infron of it, making the conversion easier not worryin about tailshaft differences,
