sierra dies at idle...

Post by islandvitara »

guys, my sierra was running fine before the coolant pipe snaped, after the change over the coolant pipe the engine keeps cutting out at idle???

all i did was drain the coolant and change the pipe, top up with coolant and it dies at idle...

ive checked all the hoses, leads, plugs, nothing seems to be wrong...is there anything ive missed - or what do i need to do?

it starts, then runs, then idle drops from 1100rpm to 950rpm then it cuts out...whole show is over in about 20 seconds!!! (if i dont rev it) idle seems to lope slightly before cutting out.

what happend?? if yas need pics let me know what of and i'll post em..

thanks, islandvit :?

could be an air pocket in the coolant lines to your carby?.....when its running take one hose off the carby and see if it is flowing....don't forget hot!

maybe your past problem with the high idle (your accel cable pulled tight) was masking your bad idle problem. and since backing off the cable it has brought in the main problem of it not idlig and u need more carby work done.
other than that im not sure

does it backfire going down hill engine braking? is there other irratic behaviour??? If so could be the choke is broken - although you're saying it idles high then drops off and dies, which would say the choke is working... unless your idle is set too low when unchoked? (you can fix that by turning the small screw near the accelerator cable).

sounds like the problem ive got atm it sucks but a few of my machanic mates have told me that its the idle jet thats blocked need to strip the carby down and get an air compressor into the jets to clear them of all the crud thats blocked them..... :)

yes it backfired last night on a test run around the block goin down hill and then it cut out...

started it up again and drove it back home...

i'l try and see if theres an air pocket in the coolant hose(s) then try pulling apart the carby and cleaning it out also

thanks guys i'll update yas tommorow

Almost sounds like the fuel cut off solenoid wire has come loose, which will cause if to run for a lil bit then cut out only on idle. May have bumped it off when you were replacing the hoses.
