Will a 24V light work when connected to 12V? Will it work at all or just be half strength?

I bought a sealed worklight from Queensland Diesel Spares (a truck acc. store for the southerners) and connected it straight to the battery and nothing happened. There is no indication of what voltage or wattage it is either so I thought that maybe it was 24V and this prevented it form working. Maybe it needs a relay

I didn't realise that this thread was still kicking
I went back to the place where I bought the lamp from and aparently it isn't a sealed light so they sold me a bulb for it. I asked about fitting it and they said that you just pull off the rubber surround. I have since tried a couple of times but decided that it wasn't going to happen and it is still sitting on the shed floor
So yeah, the problem is the user
Thanks for the replies
