About to order a new Patrol ... advice + ideas?
2 parts to my question; what should I pay, and what should I do to it first off!
PART 1
I'm about to order a new Patrol.
Here's the spec:

3.0 Diesel
Bullbar, Towbar, Driving lights (free deal)
Cargo Barrier
Snorkel
Tinting
I've talked them down to about 49500 drive away for all of that - does anyone know what they're really worth or how far down they might actually go?

I'm considering lifting this one 2-3" for the added clearance - what are the knock-on affects of that? If I just did springs and shockers 2", would it affect the drive train? How far can you lift it before you need to start playing with the transfer case, the steering geometry etc?
Is 2k installed reasonable to expect?

Suggest you also consider 3" exhaust and ECU box (e.g. DP Chip Steinbauer, etc) to really help the performance. You won't regret this.
One other thing is if you don't ask the dealer they'll typically supply the Alloy Bull Bar but I got the Steel one at not extra cost. The steel bar also has a hole that allows you to fit a winch in if you ever decide to do so. The plus is that you require nothing else for this, i.e. no winch cradle etc just bolt it in.
I went with Ironman 2" lift and so far all good. Did also put in some polyair's in the back for when we really load up.

Not 100% sure on your situation, but if i had $50k + to spend on a patrol, i'd hunt down a TD42T, ST trim, and something that allready got all of the aftermarket cr@p on it. That way someone else has lost out on the cost of putting the stuff on, and you get a truck that will haul @rse with a few mods, and will also do 500,000km EASY.

id wait a few years til nissan brings out a better motor, the ZD30 is getting long in the tooth now, no matter what theyre doing to them, and the new fuel economy doesnt seem to agree with the specs they quote?

Was camping on the weekend (about 1ook's south of Katherine) and was chatting to a guy from Vic. I was asking him about his 3.0CRD ST (trying to make comparisons between my 05 ZD30 ST-S. His new Patrol has done 7000k's and is on it's second engine.
At precisely 445k's old, rattle shake bang, nothing. Number 2 piston/cylinder was gone, is all he was told.
Nissan were great to him, couldn't have helped him out anymore.
Still, blown CRD engine. Hmmmmmm??????
They fixed it on the 2060 model I think

This is a bit off topic, but last thursday i went to my local diesel workshop to pick up a quote for a turbo setup, and he had three ZD30 Gu's in there getting worked on. This workshop is only a two man operation, in a small country town too.
Two had cracked heads (BIG cracks too!), and one had a turbo that destroyed itself. ALL of these trucks were under 100,000km - i checked the odo's myself.
One of the guys we go riding with just had his 45,000km Navara sh!t itself over the long weekend, and is down purchasing a Triton thismorning.
Apparently he had a fairly hard time fitting the Navara up the local Nissan dealers @rse too....

I'm planning to put a set of 285 Cooper STs, 2-3" of lift, winch, roof console. And perhaps a chip, cos I can see how that might be good.
As for a 2nd hand one, I don't think i'd trust a 2nd hand truck that was modded up, and neither would the mrs. And 2nd hand is higher finance rate, so I couldn't spend as much.
I love it how you get the stories of "I know a guy who's one of them died". Hands up if you know 2 people who have the same car that didn't die, and they're perfectly happy with it?

Firstly, different people have different concepts of "modded up" i suppose. Next time your in Melbourne, count how many toorak tractors you see with bullbars, and how many dont. My point being that there is a cr@pload of people who through habit, tick the boxes on the purchase form "bullbar = tick , side steps = tick , driving lights = tick , snorkel = tick etc etc. You get my idea. Just cause it has the gear on it, doesn't mean that it has been used as intended.
Secondly, the question of the ZD30 reliability is not a maybe, or a story, its actually pretty likely that you WILL have issues under 200,000km. They even have issues under 150k , and 100k, and 60k, and.......
Do a search for "ZD30" on here and see what you dig up. I could count the success stories on one hand. We're not having a dig at you, and not trying to scare you, just giving you some "insider information". Dont go telling everyone now - its top secret.

As for mods, if it has a 3" lift and/or 33"+ tyres, I'd consider that modded. Bull bars are accessories, not mods.

My best mate has an 80 series with 6inch lift kit and 35's, and every item out of the ARB catalogue. His car has NEVER been offroad, he even whinges when it goes on gravel cause of the dust and stone chips.
If you have a keen eye, its pretty easy to pick the cars that have been used as intended, and the ones that are just blacktop cruisers.

No they lied. The gearbox, transfer, axles and diffs are all basically the same items fitted behind the TD42 and TB48 with the exception of ratios. GUIV and newer however don't have that legendary LSD in the rear apparently - they have a smaller unit. Still works pretty well but just wont last as long as the old ones did.
Are you keeping this car for the long haul? The 3.0L manual is a good option for this - the resale is OK and they're pretty bloody cheap to run for such a large 4wd. Insurance and rego is pretty bloody cheap for them.
As for the CRD ZD30's reliability... Ignore anyone posting about it as none of them have got any real, proven cases of a CRD version blowing up. On that note, you can probably ignore me if you want as I've got no proof that the previous motor's issues have been fixed with the CRD revision (on that note, its probably not common knowledge that the whole top end of the motor has changed - that includes the pistons and head - but that doesn't mean it isnt still prone to excessively high EGT's which will melt a piston and crack heads in ANY diesel out there and its as easy as having an airflow meter get contaminated and not read properly....). What I do know is that some have got issues with fuel consumption (mind you, find a commonrail turbo diesel from any manufacturer which doesn't have random high fuel consumption issues.. yes its a widespread problem believe it or not) and bogged's report of a CRD blowing with 445km on the odometer screams at me "built fault" which isn't an overly common thing to have happen but it can. Moreso to australian, american and european built vehicles than japanese but anyway. Thats not to say that there's no problem with the old direct injection motor however. There is - it is really prone to overfueling and overboosting which is obviously bad for any diesel's health.
The CRD hasn't been around long enough to really prove itself for reliability yet - but compared to the first series of direct injecton ZD30's fitted to the patrols the CRD is looking good. *touch wood*

That's what I hear. The old ones had issues, but the new ones are ok.
I do like the fuel figures, and don't plan to mod it as far up the wazzoo as I have other trucks. 3" with 285s should be sufficient. Stops the mrs complaining she can't get in it, too.
