i'm only new to suzuki's and i'm planning a major service this weekend as i dont know the previous service history. so i called up a place we deal with here in maitland and i they're telling me my coil pack is worth $180.85 trade price. can this be right as i purchased a GT40 coil for a rangey two weekends ago for a mere $45.00
am i being ripped?

Some more info on your rig might help everyone answer your questions better dude like what you drive ....? Vitara Sierra year model engine what not....
Other wise Im guessing if its a newer model Vitara where you run specialist coil packs with twin cam motors and such it might be the general going rate, other wise if its just a standard 1.3 or 1.6 carby motor just look up the Bosch range at a car parts store and itll tell you what you can use and as you said a GT40 coil might be the one....

I think Mightymouse (who has very close connections with Bosch) has indicated there's no generic Bosch replacement recommended for the sierra.
He may want to correct me here though.

Hi weaves.
I did a little coil hunting recently and found that the recommended coils for the Sierra (Mine is a 91 1.3L) ranged in price from $180 (a 'trade' price) to $250ish (genuine Suzuki price). I nearly died when I found this out (you are not alone!)
I was looking to replace my coil as a precautionary measure only. I decided to stay with the original coil for now, and I did not look any further into it...
Gwagensteve, I'm pretty sure you are correct in regards to the Bosch situation.
As for running a GT40, well it will work, BUT the ignition module may not last forever with the increased energy that a GT40 produces...

Steve is correct - Bosch do not recommend any replacement coil for the Sierra.
And without doing to death an old subject, the ignition module on Suzuki's ( and may Jap cars of the period ) is not designed to drive more "powerful" coils - stick with a standard coil.
Experimenting can cause tears, coils and modules need to be matched carefully to achieve optimal performance.

thanks for all the info. i was never going to put a GT40 in there i was just using that as an example price.
Being that i was only going to replace it as it would be the only part of the ignition system i wouldnt be new i might just run it till it blows up. i'm going to put a newer engine in by the end of the year anyway. its not giving me any indication it wont last till then.

Something I forgot to ask - whats wrong with your existing coil anyway ?
Coils can fail - mostly due to HT arcing but they don't wear out - if its not showing any signs of distress around the HT terminal and still running the car without misfires then leave it alone.
Ignition problems can be the coil but are more likely to be lead / dissy cap / rotor related in the first instance.
