im looking at buying a wagon type 4wd, a defender has popped up on the radar as well as a 80/100 series cruiser or GQ/GU patrol.
here come some ideas and questions:
ive heard the TD5 (i think its called) is the engine to look for, true or not?

how strong are the mechanical bits and pieces, do they take some punishment before throwing in the towel?

what are they like on long trips, they look very simple and i know they are, what are the seats like and do they all come with with AC and power steering?

do they develop many rattles and bangs as the km pile on, also what is n acceptable amount of km on a 2nd hand one?

i would be looking to raise it up 2 or so inches, will this fit 33" tyres or how high do they need to go up to fit them. How wide can a tyre go without major modifications too.

is there plenty of aftermarket gear like bars, roof racks, drawers, suspension etc as that can be a big draw card to the nissan and toyota.

that is all i can think of right now, if anyone has any other helpful info of the pros and cons of defenders it would be greatly appreciated.

all TD5 have power and air, 2" lift will fit 285/75/16's easy, better then a 33, similar height slightly narrower.

All TD5's have traction control (pretty sure?) and will be kinda kind on th driveline - as long as you don't drive like a toyo/pootrol owner!

kind find a better donk for fuel consumption in a big truck - 10-12L/100km easy to chip and i'cool for bif improvement on power :twisted:

plenty of aftermarket gear for them

there are plenty of fellas on here with heaps heaps more then info on here then me that will steer your ship to a good buy......fender ;)

You shouldn't need to lift it at all to fit 33s. I know plenty of people running 255x85/16 with no lift, myself included. I have a 285x75/16 spare, and I have no problems on the couple of occasions that I've had to run it.

Not all TD5's have traction control, just the Extremes. I know someone with a TD5 110 without traction control, and traction control does not come on the 130s. As for traction control being kind on the drive line, I believe it to be the opposite, as it constantly shock loads the axles / CV's with the brakes grabbing and releasing the wheel. I've had to remove a broken CV from a Disco 2 with CDL on a trip that had Nissan X-trails and Ford Escapes on it!

depends how much travel you have, my 130 with 2" lift required guard trimming with 285/75's but with similar to stock travel, yes you will be fine.

yes, sorry my bad you are correct there.

i have a mate that had 37's on T/C and no breakages for some time. pending how you drive i suppose. i think that a rover with T/C will both go further and break less then one without? but hey me no expert...............
