Newcomer to Nissan
Hello everyone in the NISSAN section of this forum Just recently rolled my little suzuki and am now on the look out for a new car. Before the Zook i had a LWB MQ diesel Patrol. It was loud, rusty and didnt look that pretty but i did 60,000kms in one year and it didnt let me down. The only thing that really shat me with them was the lousy 24v electrical system
Well now i want to invest a bit more money into a vehicle that will last me a while. I have always liked the Mavericks/patrols and decided thats what i want for my next car.
What i am after is peoples opinions on petrol vs lpg vs diesel mainly and how many kms is too many. Alot of the cars for sale here in perth average 300,000kms for the petrols and average $10,000 in price and the diesels average 350,00kms and $12,500. My friend has an awesome maverick petrol with heaps of balls. I loved the power in it but how bad is the fuel economy compared between the three??
Thats all i can think of at the moment and i thank everyone for their time

Can of worms..

it all depends on their history.. SOME Petrols with that many klms on are getting on.. Diesels with that many klms are ok. There are lots of Diesels with 5-700,000klms on the clock never been rebuilt... Yes they are due, but Personally I think thats impressive!!

Petrol will always outdo a Diesel in Power. But you pay for it in fuel, and wear.
I loved the power in it but how bad is the fuel economy compared between the three??
Petrol 20/100klm
LPG 16-18/100klm
Diesel 12-15/100klm
Depending on what you want to do with the car really, weekend hack, tourer, desert tourer, weekday car etc...
I seem to get much better than 20L/100km from my 4.2 petrol, but so far I've only really measured it on a long trip (got 14.5l/100km Syd-Bris the day I bought it). Plus mine is SWB and hence lighter.
It had 247,000 klicks on it when I bought it for $9000 and it is in 100% original condition - everyone who has seen it comments on this.
I bought it in preference to a few others with lower miles because it is so tidy and it had a very extensive service history.
I'm definitely not sorry I bought the petrol, personally -a few weeks in. A turbo diesel would be great (but is this just a GU thing??), a non-turbo diesel imho isn't worth the extra dollars, especially since they are invariably higher milers. The petrol is really pretty toey and has plenty of grunt to spin those bigger tyres you're gonna be putting on.
Dual fuel would probably be the best of both worlds.
Still, that's just me and I can certainly understand why some people prefer the diesel. However, even if they last 500,000km plus, they all seem to be a little smoky.
BTW, don't forget that the engine isn't the only thing that has done the miles - 300,000 on a diesel vs 200,000 on a petrol means every other component of the car has done an extra 100,000km, and that might mean a whole lot of extra rattles and non-engine problems. On the flipside, less power might mean less abuse.
Basically, nobody can answer this question for you: the downsides of a diesel are replacement cost, repair cost, higher purchase price, stink/smoke, and gutlessness. The downside of a petrol is fuel cost. I would say they are both very durable engines.
The bonus with all the engines is you can buy with some confidence: if it sounds smooth and doesn't blow smoke, you can be pretty sure it's good.
Good luck!

Hey thanks guys i guess the Petrol/lpg is going to be the way to go. I like diesels but on the same hand i like power and they aint got that. Still i am finding it hard to find a maverick/patrol here with less kms. They all seem to be around the 300,000 to 350,000 and still around the $10,000 mark. A lady here has a standard diesel lwb in good condition with 260,000 for $10,500. Sounds like a pretty good deal???

I think that would be a good deal!!!!
They are going for $11-19k (theres one in trading post $27k!)
www.redbook.com.au is the place to check prices.
Lets just say yOu couldnt go wrong for that price. If you dont like the diesel, theres lots of people who would buy it, could nearly offset a v8 petrol motor with the proceeds, then only need the fitting and engineering.

1) Turbo is only $3000 - superchargers are only $5000
2) Diesel may have more klms on the components and accessories, but they do last...

Yeah... go drive it and see if you find it unbearably gutless or not. If you don't mind it, it's probably okay for the money.
I would think you could get a good petrol LWB for $8500 or less though. When I was looking recently I saw HEAPS of them in that price range.

You are in Qld, he is in Perth, and has stated they are rare there....
True, but I looked nationally and ended up buying in Sydney, flying down and driving it home. From what I could see they were cheaper in WA than in Qld - though cheapest of all in NSW for some reason.
Anyway, whatever. I'm only trying to help.
I'd suggest waiting until after Xmas as people might be holding off on advertising at the moment.

Shark,
This is just a thought. Why don't you look for 1 on the net within 1000 ks of yourself.
If you find something you like, there are people who will go right over it for you for around $200. It may cost you $200 to fly/catch a bus to it, but if it means getting what you want for the $s you have, then well worth it.
Good luck
James

God of Magnificant Ideas!
Well its starting to become a real pain in the arse. Most cars at the dealers are around the 11,000 mark. One guy had one for 9,000 but then he put a new set of no name brand tyres on it and put the price up two grand Still not 100% sure wether i want a lwb or a swb or petrol or diesel. Not many diesels here and some of them are still asking around $15,000!!!!!!!! And nearly all the petrols have between 290,000kms and 299,000kms on them. People must get a fright when they see the dreaded 300,000 mark ahead
Im just being a little bit careful cause i dont want to spend 10,000 on a vehicle that is going to need to be rebuilt in 12 months PLUS i want a little money left over for lift kit and 33's

Go the Long wheel base in the forsale section.. the one with 39's... You wont need more for lift kit etc.
Then you get a nice drive home to test it!
Okay actually getting closer to finding what i want now, seems to be some decent ones on the market. Spent alot of time reading all the previous posts on this site last night but could not find the right answer to my question.
To fit 33's will a 50mm spring lift be sufficient??? I know pretty much zippo about lifts on a coil sprung nissan. Any thoughts would be great.
Cheers

I would guess 3inch would be better, and cost the same... just if your insurance co will allow it they usually stop at 50mm, thats the mainstream insurers.
