I wouldn't go so far as to say that.
But I wouldn't say that the CRD is proving to be unreliable though.
Oh BTW might pay to try out the low range sensitivity/speed thing. The little sewing machine of an engine really does lack low down torque and with the standard low range and those big tyres you'll be right on your way for panel & tyre carnage if you do any sort of rock stuff i guess. Or a new clutch. One of the two.

About to order a new Patrol ... advice + ideas?
35k+ for a used 4.2 with a questionable history, or about 25k (packaged before tax, with fuel, servicing, tyres rego, insurance all tax free too) for a brand new one. I can afford to redo the ratios and upgrade the clutch as required...
Then sell it off in 3-4 years and get the SECOND gen of the new one that isn't even out yet-i never buy the first series of a new engine even if it is a v6 3.6 tdi. :-)

Are you keeping this car for the long haul? The 3.0L manual is a good option for this - the resale is OK and they're pretty bloody cheap to run for such a large 4wd. Insurance and rego is pretty bloody cheap for them.
As for the CRD ZD30's reliability... Ignore anyone posting about it as none of them have got any real, proven cases of a CRD version blowing up. On that note, you can probably ignore me if you want as I've got no proof that the previous motor's issues have been fixed with the CRD revision (on that note, its probably not common knowledge that the whole top end of the motor has changed - that includes the pistons and head - but that doesn't mean it isnt still prone to excessively high EGT's which will melt a piston and crack heads in ANY diesel out there and its as easy as having an airflow meter get contaminated and not read properly....). What I do know is that some have got issues with fuel consumption (mind you, find a commonrail turbo diesel from any manufacturer which doesn't have random high fuel consumption issues.. yes its a widespread problem believe it or not) and bogged's report of a CRD blowing with 445km on the odometer screams at me "built fault" which isn't an overly common thing to have happen but it can. Moreso to australian, american and european built vehicles than japanese but anyway. Thats not to say that there's no problem with the old direct injection motor however. There is - it is really prone to overfueling and overboosting which is obviously bad for any diesel's health.
The CRD hasn't been around long enough to really prove itself for reliability yet - but compared to the first series of direct injecton ZD30's fitted to the patrols the CRD is looking good. *touch wood*
local garage has near new ford with blown motor, i hear toyotas D4's are dieing. baiscly you ALWAYS are going to gt some die no matter what make they are. they are all lightly built high performace diesels. they all suffer from problems.
i suspect that blown CRD had turbo problem. however almost all deisel run variable turbo's these days and they all have problems with them.
it all comes down to how well the company looks after you with warranty claims.

No matter what car I got, you name it, I could destroy it. Or, I could be nice to it, and a bit lucky, and it last longer... until I destroy it anyway.

Just on a year and 40,000km on the old's 3.0L CRD Manual. Only "problem" so far was a randomly high idle speed when it was new. This issue has never come back. Cruise control used to surge the throttle but this is also no longer a problem. Vehicle has quite a few rattles inside because it was pulled apart by fucking idiots to spray the rust proofing stuff everywhere. Its very sensitive to fuel and you can really feel when its got a crappy batch of diesel.
