4.4 v8 P76 carby issues? What to do.
HI all i have a range rover with a P76 engine in it, its got a 350 holley on it and it has issues.
1: It bogs down way too easy on hills then really struggles to start.
2: I need to make a snorkel to fit it and really struggling to find something to fit it
Basically id like to know what the options are any help is good,

Oh, by the way, it don't run on fuel, has a 350 holley, its "missing bits" only picked it up last night, so haven't looked, goes well but, 4 straight 12.5hr night shifts now, so wont look for a while yet

Tim I've sent you a pm regarding an existing modified P76 manifold with the twin strombergs. I looked into putting the efi from a 3.9 onto the P76 before xmas but there were no workshops up here that were interested in doing it. There are adaptors available from somewhere in Melbourne - there is a thread on here. Unsure whether the standard computer will run a P76 - others may know better.
I can tell the you the difference offroading between a P76 with 350 Holley and 3.9 efi is incredible - I had issue with the holley flooding - some have overcome this, but I was never able to. I have no experience with gas. Now I can actually choose a line rather than point, floor it and hope for the best.
If I had kept the 2 door on the road I would have fitted the manifold with twin strombergs.

I know longer have the car but had it for several years with the P76/Rover manifold setup. The carbies were the standard SU type Strombergs that were fitted to the 3.5 engine, never had an issue with this set up at all, had plenty of torgue, no fueling problems. I had the rover heads fitted as well so maybe this helped with the fueling?, fitting the Rover heads is another issue though as there are oiling problems to over come although no that difficult if you know how, also the rover heads have an extra head bolt so the P76 block will need to be drilled and tapped.standard rangie carbie as in twin SU's or whatever they are? Have you had any problems with lack of fuel feed or too much??

I had SU HS carbs on mine but removed them due to the shocking spacers that kept leaking, so I have a holley 350 on an adaptor while I modify another P76 manifold to run the SUs.
You dont have to use the outer bolts if you fit the rover heads (later heads dont have them anyway) but you do have to drill the oil feed, I recently trashed a block drilling it as when I blew the swarf out I had an air leak to the water jacket, possibly a bad casting.

hey, im running a stromberg single at the moment on my 4.4, it starves a fair bit. I had a 350 holley running on my 3.5 and a snorkel. i had the gas research body cut and atatched a 4inch into 3 inch downpipe reducer off a house downpipe, to feed into a later model air cleaner then a hose to the snorkel. worked fine. the holley had no problems off road as the carby was reversed and an overflow clip inserted at the float end of the tank. im now trying to fit the holley to my 4.4 bit of stuffing around, hope that helps...

If the holley is reversed, wouldn't it flood going down a hill instead?
I always thought it was bad having the car stall while going up a hill until it did it going down a steep section due to one mechanics modifications to the holley - that mod was removed very quickly - no brakes or steering.
I have spoken to someone who had one reversed on a comp truck, but also had a manual accelerator cable to increase the revs to reduce the flooding

This set up runs a homebrew snorkel made from PVC and a few bits from commadors VB,VL,VN and works grate
Also dont fool ya self with a reversed holly its the worse thing ya can do my mod to the bowl works the best even beta than the so called off road kit which is the plastic extension for the original vent there a waste of money so is the spring loaded neadle and seat

i hadnt found a limitation with the 350 on steep angles?? with the bowl reversed i had no issues. the plastic clip is inside the bowl where the jets are cost me 2 bucks from les richmond. i was told it reduces the flooding effect and with it in place it allows you to comfortably decend hills without stalling. have you got photos of your holley modded?? i would love to have a look..

I have removed the old P76 manifold and replaced it with a willpower 4 barrel and then fitted a Holley Projection Unit to the top of it including VL efi pump and swirl pot.
It's not tuned properly as yet, however I have gained 2.5l to the 100 K so far. Getting 16.3 ltr to the 100k. The orginal old manifold with the twin carb setup and ali Y adaptor was giving me 18.88l to the 100k so I'm ahead on fuel economy and way up on HP. HUGE DIFFERENCE!

do you know what push rods were used with the rover heads on the P76 block?
