80 series owners i need help electrical problem

Post by XXL_45L_CRUISER »

hi all.
my 80 keeps blowing the fuse for the tail lights and dash lights every time i put a fuse in it you turn the lights on and it just blows straight away, sometimes they work but most of the time they dont. i have checked the wiring to the tail lights and the wire for towing a trailer and all is good.

The second problem is the car will start and some times not start.....
i turn the key and it makes like a tick sound and doesnt start then i can turn the key again and it will start. got reds and batterys are fine.
i have been told it could be the solinoyed in the starter motor is there any way of cleaning it or would it just be better to get a new one?

Have you fitted anything recently or repaced anything ifyou have it could be a good place to start looking for a short.

Check the wire that goes to the solinoid before you go replacing it even pull it off clean the conection then refit and see if it works if not pull it out and see what a auto elecy will charge you to fix it. Might be cheaper to buy a manual and have a go yourself
plenty of parts on the bench

You can just replace the contacts in the solonoid, will take you about 15min once the starter is off, and about $30 in parts.

killalux has probably nailed your starter issue. There is a set of contacts inside the starter housing that have probably worn out. $30 ish dollars in parts and 15-30 mins if you're half handy on the tools. Outside chance that you may need to add a relay to the starter circuit but not likely on an '80.

Trailer plug usually does this, could the wiring be worn through or pulled out? Bet it started happening after a 4b trip
