27" long rear shocks

Hi all.

I've measured up and I reckon I need to space the bumpstops down to prevent shock damage but so many people tell me otherwise.

How far can one reasonably expect the standard GQ rear bumpstop to compress?

Suspension gurus - how far do you normally space down the rear bumpstops for the 27" long shock? (I'd give you a compressed measurement which would be better but I'm not quite tricky enough to compress the bloody things and measure at the same time :p).

I'm thinking of spacing them down around an inch as this will also solve the scrubbing inside the guards on full articulation (both sides).

we need a 50mm rear spacer for our 29" shocks, so its a fair bet you will need 25-30mm, but you do really need to compress the shock and measure it, because some [rancho come to mind] dont really add up on compressed/extended lengths all the time.

We add the spacer to the diff housing, not under thye bump stop.

easy way is pull your coil out then measure. I did mine this way in the drive way, got some funny comments by pedestrians.

I put 29.5" shocks on my GU 3" lift today and on articulation compression a Procomp shock doesn't over compress.

I will do the nastytroll test tomorrow. I will measure for all other shocks while I am at it. I have a 98 GU, I would be interested to know if there are differences between the models. On the GQ I had years ago, I am certain I had to raise the bump stops 3" to do the same thing, so dunno.

you will want to allow a little for compression of the bump stops incase you get airbourne, I know people dont go out to deliberately jump there patrols n such but it does happen.

I have 36" shocks rear pro comps in my ute, dropped the bump stops 80mm, then the extentions went into the girls car and the new bump stops are longer so workout 100mm lowwer. This is with 6" dobinsons and 7" kings in the ute.

The girls wagon runs 34" pro comps with the 80mm extensions and a 4" lift.

Both have been runnin this set up for 5 years plus, no problems.

I was running 40" rears with 14" stroke on my GU ute, with 50mm bump spacers on the back, and running 29.5" fronts with 10" travel with 30mm bump spacers.

General rule of thumb is to allow 30mm of bump stop crush.

At least I know what I'm up against now.

30mm crush seems a bit much for the standard GQ rear bumpstops which are, umm, basically solid but it looks like my inner arch scrubbing is worse than I realised so thats probably going to be a good distance anyway.

Other than that, all looks good to go.


Got bigger problems with the front end and the shocks I bought though.. they're around 25.5" long. :p

God why am I bothering with these nice shocks (eldebrock) on a GQ.
