Does anyone know if it's possible to adjust the shift pattern on the 4HP22 trans in early RR Classics and Disco's? Mine changes gears too early for my liking, it's in 3rd before crossing the lights. If I give it more than half throttle it still only holds first until about 15km/h. Kickdown seems to work fine, it will change back to 3rd up slight inclines but sometimes I think 2nd would be more appropriate, especially while towing. It won't change back to 2nd unless I nearly floor it and then as soon as I lift off the throttle, it changes back into 3rd. There's nothing in the Haynes manual on kickdown adjustment and I can't find anything on the net but I've heard this is what controls the shift characteristics. Just want to check before playing with it too much. Cheers.

You will need to adjust your kickdown cable (tighten). This will help with holding in the gears for a longer period and get it down to the appropriate gear while asceding hills. It will also help in pulling back or dropping back into te right gear when slowing also.

Not know how mechanically minded you are, you should be able to adjust it yourself. Just little bits at a time. Usually a trial and error thing. Maybe start with the factory specs (unsure what they are). Most manufacturers have a measurement between the adjuster bracket (fixed point and a mark or slide position say on the cable sheath. But being used and possibly a fair few kilometres of wear, this will have obviously changed. Band wear and the like.

The Haynes Disco manual has the adjustment in it. 025 to 1.25mm from the sleeve on the cable to the end of the adjuster.

Yea, just checked it and it's about 1mm from the metal stop on the cable to the threaded end of the sleeve. I might have a play and tighten it up a bit and see if it makes a difference. Thanks for the help.

Pull on the shifter will be the most effective way ;)

Over adjust the kickdown and you'll step the cable into the kickdown portion before full throttle and damage the cable, be warned :shock:

But its a good idea to make sure its correctly adjusted as this controls line pressure for the transmission
