Does your 4Runner do this???

Post by 4BJASE »

Hey all... I think I have a ghost in my car lol ... The electrics in it are doing my head in... Its not happening every time I start it but most times I start my car all the dash lights stay on for around 10 minutes (but sometimes less) but then sometimes it doesn't do it at all...

Then theres the tail lights... When the headlights are off they work fine, both brake lights work etc... Turn the lights on and they behave strangely... like an old commodores lol they are really dim and then they transfer all light into one brake light when you hit the brake...

Now we have the bull bar, sometimes the indicators work... but more often than not they don't...

But the WEIRDEST of all is (and its only happened a small number of times...) when I put it in reverse the right hand indicator stays on... Doesn't blink, just stays on...

Can anyone help?? --- Ghost Busters?? lol
Cheers ;)

Sounds like a earth problem. Try clean and tighten the main earth points and then go from there

I had a 1972 Cortina, when I hit the horn button the interior light came on.
Almost certainly and earth/negative short problem.

Pretty hard to trace really.

good luck.

get a torch, some sand paper, some electrical tape and some beer. this could take a while.

start with your indicator and brake light issue as these are obviously connected. because you know the cause and effect you know where to start looking. check all your wires closely, remove all old tape and dirt off wires and plugs and make sure there was no shorting anywhere. some people do some bad stuff with electrics.

Once you find it you might find it also sorts something else out.

The start on your other systems checking for clean contacts, loose wires and cut insulation.

Always leave wiring in a better organised state than you find it, otherwise annoying stuff like finding out your reverse light shorts out the alternator fuse... and your two hours from home in winter on the side of the hume hwy with out any batterie to run your hazard lights... :bad-words:

good luck

Had a 94 Townace and the right indicator would come on randomly. Sometimes flashed once when you got out and left it, sometimes would flash when you started it, and sometimes started flashing while doing 110 down the motorway... Was a company car and I don't have it any more so it's someone else's drama now

Check if the brake light that doesnt work has been fittied with a single fillament bulb. Commodores do the same thing and bring the dash Illumination on when braking

Could be an issue in the combination switch, as it switches earth. Could also be an earth return from the loom to the body as stated above.

Check your trailer plug, they can give heaps of problems even when not being used.
