Custom cut auto glass - Vic

Has anyone had any glass cut to size for a custom job ? must be toughened for use as a rear window in a ute chop, if someone can confirm that perspex cannot be used for this.. What sort of price can i expect ?

Personally, I wouldn't be keen to use perspex as such - I mean the very clear brittle kind of perspex, but some kind of polycarbonate that is (very) slightly less clear but not prone to shattering.

No idea on the legalities of materials for this. FWIW I would consider shaping the rear window hole to suit an existing piece of ute glass, that way if it breaks you don't need another custom window and seal. And you can just use a second hand one now, which will be cheaper.

Ute glass is first option but if i cant find a factory size to fit , custom cut glass is only option.

Yup took a while to find a guy. He cut me up some windows for the back.

To be legal has to be auto glass with the stamp.

Cost 100 for back window and 130 for two of the small side windows

If you can find a window out of a Ute, Panelvan, bus etc that has the stamp and just needs cutting, take it to someone with a water jet cutter.
These machines can cut just about any material from stainless to acrylic sheet, glass and even wood!

pm walker or mickrangie. I've lost the blokes contact details, but they had someone that can cut to size and do an "AusStandards" stamp (the important bit) and pretty damn cheap too considering.

Didnt know waterjet can cut glass, there is a place across the rd from work.

Good luck cutting Toughened glass with any means, waterjet included.
Plate glass , laminated yes.
If its a rear ute window just use laminated.

It appears you are correct. Toughened glass cannot be Water Jet cut but it can be cut and THEN toughened.

Toughened glass is plate glass that has been cut and put through the process of Toughening, heated to red hot and then controlled cooled. It is then under stress. When it breaks it breaks into very small pieces. It is a safety glass.

Laminated glass is also a safety glass.

Cars windscreens these days are laminated, side windows are toughened.

Any glass shop worth its salt would be able to take your ply template and send it off to a toughening plant to have a piece of glass cut and toughened, but for the price just put a piece of laminated in. Just have to make sure the rubber you get suit either 5.38mm or 6.38mm.

I think laminated windscreen glass may have a slightly thicker sheet of plastic in it than domestic glass. But domestic Lam would be fine, and your glass shop should be able to include the watermark in the piece.

I went to Windscreens O'brian to get a price on some custom glass for my bobtail rangey . Cut to the size I want , stamped and ready to go was $180.00.
Not too bad I tought.

Can't do curved glass though.

How big a piece was it ? thats not too bad, but i'm on a tight budget so cheapest option wins. If i cut down a standard rangie rear screen it will chop off the spec stamp if that is a problem ?

You will not be able to cut down a rangie rear screen, it will shatter.
Go to ARB, Flexiglass etc and see their range of rear door glass (toughened) may be a size you can use??

I wont try and cut it myself but get it professionally done if it can, my too options are - get custom glass for the frame i already have or get a steel panel and find glass that will fit it off a ute/ canopy or whatever.

Nearly all glass shops will be dealing with toughening plants on a weekly basis.
Just cut a ply template of the exact shape that you want, take it in and they should be able to give you a quote and send it to the tougheners or cut a piece of laminate pretty quickly.
By the time you stuff around looking for the perfect shape it could be cut and in.
