Would a barbed fitting and hoseclamps be sufficient to cut and join the high pressure side of power steering hose? I know the fittings are usually crimped types but for a DIY repair would a brass joiner do the job?

no a barbed fitting and hose clamps will not hold! the HP side of a power steering pump can be upto 1000 PSI.
your best bet is to go see Enzed or Pirtek they can put a joiner in for you (but will probabally cost about $60) but for that money get them to replace the hose reusing the old fittings, that way your paying for a section of hose (at about $20 per metre, but only the length needed) and a couple of ferrules(the bits that crimp the hose, these are maybe $20 each) your saving money on not needing a joiner fitting.
On some vehicles the hosetails cannot be reused because they crush too much when crimped and to reuse they have a high failure rate

the best way to get a good price is to ring them up and see if they have a mobile fella close by that you can meet up with. GO TO HIM to get it done and PAY CASH and let it be known that you dont need a reciept.

if it is straight ends it will be easy, if it has bends in it then get them to use a JIC weld on to replace one of the hosetails (the easiest one to access in the car) and then use a JIC hosetail, this is a swivel nut fitting which will allow you to position the hose and then tighten up the fitting.
Just a word of warning. NEVER reuse old crimp hosetails with a new ferrule. Its a dangerous practice as the ferrule and hosetail are a integeral unit when crimped and switching brands (stem/ferrule) is not a good idea.
Cut ends off, silver solder to new hosetails/JIC nipples whatever, but dont just cut the ferrule off and crimp stem into a new hose with a new ferrule. No hydraulic hose supplier/wholesaler will warrant their hose with someone elses fitting on it, let alone a bodged assembly with used and missed matched componets.
If you take the hose to someone who will just use the stem again and crimp it with a new ferrule, they are only doing it cause its easier/quicker for them, not better/cheaper for you.
