Can people recommend a really good, sealed steel inline air filter plenum air box. It will be used as a remote type air filter assembly.

I love their statements "down to about 5 micron" and 10-20 micron causes the most wear??? By contrast, Donaldson has the biggest R&D department in the business, and is among the few manufacturers that people with seriously expensive (off highway) engines trust (mining, etc).

If a company like donaldson made false claims as to their filters performance, they would be wide open to a whole world of legal pain. Donaldson are pretty good value for money. I have a donaldson filter head on my snorkel. $30 compared to $70 odd for a safari equivalent.

Pretty much anyone who has a motor in a harsh environment uses donaldson. They're not expensive for the protection they offer. They're not sexy at all though.
Don't make the mistake of using rice or "power adding" parts in a 4WD, they're not suited.

Ok, who sells donaldson stuff here in Melbourne? I really need to see the filters before buying so I can work out how I'm going to make this setup work... I'm so limited in space it isn't funny.

Stirlsilver - what exactly are you trying to do???
Donaldson make many OEM filters. So toyota filters (e.g.) are usually Donaldson. Most filter suppliers or truck spares places should stock donaldson filters. Fleetgard and MANN+HUMMEL are usual as good though if you can't get donaldson.
On my IIA I have a hilux filter box, which is quite compact.
Generally though, the larger the filter the better, so squeeze in the biggest one you can.

Well, I fitted an EFI manifold to the engine. And on the stage 1 the engine is not centered in the car but over to the left (as you probably know). Unfortunately the EFI manifold has the throttle body on the left hand side also, so I have very little room between the throttle body and the side of the engine bay.

Mixer ring -> inner guard wall -> outer guard wall -> elbow -> rest of snorkel

I'm definitely open to suggestions, but I can see that putting a filter inside the engine bay will require complicated plumbing to get to the air filter and then out to the snorkel... so yeah... i'm definitely open to suggestions.

If it was me I would put the normal Stage 1 (or similar) filter behind the engine, and just run more complicated plumbing. Any filters compact enough to do what you want would either be very restrictive or useless - unless you can use a disco/rrc barrel filter.
As it is, the stock RRC filter is 1/2 the size of a tdi filter. That should surely be compact enough???
