Cruise Control on a Rocky

Hi all,

Just wanting to hear from anyone who has fitted cruise control to there diesel Rocky.

What brand?
How well it performed?
Any tricks to the install?

I'm looking at fitting a Command AP60 module.

Anybody fitted anything else.

Oh, and before anyone says it, no bricks or hand throttles.... :D

I've often thought about fitting a cruise control.
You could be the first in the world to fit one to a Rocky!

When we eventually sell my wifes car I was going to remove the cruise control from it and fit it to my Rocky.

It's the same brand as the one you're considering. I installed it many years ago and it has given no troubles in all that time.

My only suggestion is go for a reputable brand like you're thinking of and make sure there is no flex in any of the cable mounting brackets for the throttle control. If brackets start bending or moving you won't get a nice constant speed setting.

Unfortunately no electronic speedo so you will have to go for the old fashioned sensor on the tailshaft setup.

With the huge torque from the Diesel, unlike them puny piddly petrol Ferozas, it shouldn't have any trouble keeping a constant speed.

Thanks for the tip's with the throttle cable.

The weak spot, from what most people that Ive spoken to say, is the speed sensor. Using the magnets on the tail shaft... or should I say loosing them seems to be the biggest problem.

Plan to use a Stud style proxy switch using the tailshaft flange plate bolts as the trigger.

See how we go I guess.

Yeah, having the turbo intercooled diesel should provide oodles of grunt for good constant speed performance.

A mate of mine has a similar one on an old hilux and always has probs with the speed senor getting dirty/muddy (magnet type).

You can get one that screws onto the box then the speedo cable screws to it.

Priced one of those at $180... :shock:

Puts out way to many pulses per rev of the tail shaft though.

Hopefully the proxy should be a good solution. There designed for industrial applications so once set up they should stand the test of time.
We use them up at the mine as underspeed sensors for the conveyors.
They continually get covered in dirt and rubbish but they keep on working.

Good suggestion using a prox sensor.
I got heaps of them at work so when the time comes I'll grab one and use it.

Im using a speed senor for my v6 and i can adjust the pulses to suit diff/tyres.Cost a bit more than $180 :roll:

Yer proxy senor would be better (use them at work too) the one on my mates hilux looked small and cheap.
