Turbo Kit For a 97 Hilux LN106

Post by wtr_sprts4life »

Hey guys -

Looking at turboing my LN106 hilux 2.8diesel.

Ive searched through pages of threads about turbos but havent really come to a conclusion yet -

So - What turbo do you guys prefer and why? & how much did they cost you all up, and what things did you have to do to make it run 100%?

And what size exhaust/setup did you install with it?

Cheers, John.

Cheapest way is to get a CT20 turbo from a 2.4 diesel hilux import, wrecker or ebay is a common place to find them.

Pretty cheap if you do it yourself - exhaust manifold from the 2.4 bolts straight onto the 2.8.

Most people recommend a 2 1/2 or 3 inch dump then a 2 1/2 inch pipe from there to get the most out of turboing it.

make sure you get it dyno tuned properly or you can do damage with bad fuel mixtures.

as for aftermarket kits there are heaps, some people claim a ct20 will out do their mates ... others say their... will out do another one.

My conclusion was if nobody could say for sure that the more expensive options were that much better, why spend the extra money.

spend the money you save on a pyro and boost gauge.

Rule of thumb seems to be limit your boost to 10psi and you should be fine, some run higher without an issue, but the number of stories of dead engines definitely increase with the boost over 10psi. depends how lucky you feel.

So you reckon use the after market ones? Are the CT20 turbos much smaller then one of the after market ones? I would rather do the cheaper option like you said, but if i know that the after market ones are going to be heaps better id save up and fork out the coin for it. I will probably towing a boat occasionally which is around 1800kgs, so i want something that has a bit of balls. As its my daily driver too, i want it to go somewhat reasonably hard.

Ive heard 2 1/2" exhaust is the way to go, turbo back. I want a nice deep torque sound, aswell as a nice whistle from the turbo. Ive got pacemaker extractors on it at the moment which are reasonably loud from inside the cabin.

Also whats a pyro?

Do i have to change fuel pump or injectors? Cheers,John.

turbo

Hi there mate the chepest and easyest way would be the ct20 with a boost gage and boost controller from arb .the arfter market one will only run the same amount of boost as the ct20 so there is no advantage but the boost controller will let u tune the boost were you need it wether it be from low revs or high revs .Personly 9psi is enough and u should not have to change injectors or injector pump. Go for CT20. If you have loads $$$ to waste you could go for the aftermarket kit, they are better, however.

My thought were for a ct 20 rather than an aftermarket.

Mine has a ct20.

all about the $$$.

1800 kegs is more than the hilux can legally tow, the limit would be 1500 if the trailer has brakes.

Wont matter what turbo you use it will be slow but you will get there.

If your going to tow such heavy weight then do it properly, dyno, boost gauge + controller maybe an oil temp guage etc as the car will be working very hard.

The pyro or EGT (exhaust gas thermometer) measures the temp in your exhaust.

Exhaust gets to hot - things go bang and your wallet runs away faster than you can ctach it.

The pyro is the best thing to use to measure how much your pushig the engine.

Ideally they fit in pre turbo where the safe limit is about 700 deg C, post turbo about 500 -550 deg C, MAX. Any hotter and things start to melt.

If your fuel/air mixture is wrong due to extra boost or what ever then the car can get very hot, usually under load like towing uphill.

if it gets too hot the back of the gas and go a bit slower but save your engine.

check out www.auberinstruments.com

and get the better probe. will cost about $100 AUD delivered. buy it in australia and pay about $300.

Checkout www.toyotasurfasn.com.au and look at the 2.4L performance mods easy ways to increase boost etc.

I have also heard that the 3L (2.8 diesel in an ln 106) runs much better with a snorkel. pretty much anything which allows the engine to breath better.

If you want to do it and do it properly with piece of mind, buy a proper kit. If you want to make it up, do as listed above. In all accounts fit a pyro, its a must. Power and torque outputs are determined by engine condition, fuel system condition and how well matched to the engine the turbo is. If the pump and/or injectors havent been done in a while, it may pay to have them looked at.

GET COMPRESSION (leak down) TEST BEFORE DOING ANYTHING
Cheap:
CT20
EGT gauge
Rebuild injectors
New Exhaust

Proper:
Custom Snorkel not a restrictive Safari or similiar
Rebuild Pump and add boost compensator
Rebuild injectors
Aftermarket kit
EGT Gauge
Mandrel aluminised exhaust (Stainless if you go on the beach)
Full cooling system flush (descale including heater) and pressure test
Fan clutch assessment and replace if needed
Timimg belt and water pump renewal along with all drive belts

Bonuses for peace of mind:
Water temp gauge
Low water alarm
Oil temp gauge
Oil pressure guage
Air precleaner on snorkel
Oil bypass filter

With EGT before or after turbo i wouldn't go past 600 degrees at the most

Set your boost to 8psi for reliability; Trust me i ran 12psi and spent $6000 on a rebuild.

Make sure your oil and water lines are the new braided type that are used on the new kits. Make sure you oil return line is large so it can drain freely.

My 2.2c (added GST)

Brad

hey guys,

thanks heaps for the info. Personally, being a apprentice engineer (hydraulics..) i really dont have the cash to fork out the kit. But from what you guys are saying, if i do the CT20 turbo kit properly, it should be fine. And id fit it myself, i know a diesel mechanic, but also know people who have a dyno.

Realistically, how much would i be looking at for the turbo & exhaust manifold? And where is the best place to source one? Ive already emailed a few wreckers for surfs, but have come back negative.

I was already considering a exhaust (2 1/2" turbo back..), and i have a safari snorkel also which seems to be working quite well for airflow. A boost controller was definitely on the cards aswell, mind you they're illegal.

Luckily i know a diesel mechanic and can probably get my pump and injectors done for a reasonable price, timing belt has just been done in the last 5-10,000ks.

Ill definitely get a pyro guage if you guys think its the difference between bang and saving a motor. Whats $100 in the scheme of things.

Thanks heaps guys!

kits.

Post by Luxisgood »

I bought mine with a safari kit installed.

check out fleabay - the surf kits seem to go for about $500.

for gauges, I bought an EGT, Boost and Oil pressure (all electric) from here http://prosportgauges.com/blue_performance_gauges.aspx landed for about $120 thereabouts.

they are stepper motors jobs and pretty cool.

regardless of what a lot of knockers say, turbo is the only way with the 3L - they are gutless otherwise.

The cheapest egt on that site was like $95 plus shipping, how did you get 3 gauges for $120 delivered?

Thehanko,

I bought my gauges a while back - and they ran some ridiculous deals initially.

Even with the current prices, the exchange rate makes them a quite viable option.

As did I. seems well put together, fitted boost gauge up today, seems to be running 9psi. pryo is on the way from the US. Will play with the boost when it arrives.

It's intercooled also, factory air box seems to restrict the flow of air into the turbo, will be changing air intake shortly so maybe take that into account when you do your conversion.

I just take the airbox cover off the hilux when in town and when I hit dirt or go a water crossing put it back on for the snorkel to work.

a lot more induction noise and it feels like it is a little more perky down low - but only subjective.. no dyno testing of this.

With the air box lid on my intercooler lines suck in before boost.
