Aftermarket cruise control, whos got what
Looking at getting a cruise control kit for my Cruiser (HZJ80 with turbo), as i am doing a round Oz trip, and there are some long boring stretches of road, and the throttle leg gets a wee bit sore and tired!! Im after peoples experiences with different brands/types, who fited them, cost, reliabilty, etc. Im in Sydney until the end of May, and i may just pay someone to fit it as a dont have the time.

I've had the AP50 in a V6 Rodeo work car. It worked OK (a bit more surge than factory cruise units I've used). I think the pad type controllers are better as the stalks look a bit cheesy and feel flimsy. The kits are about $220 to buy.
I'm currently looking at fitting one to my GQ 4.2 Diesel but am not sure how easily the cable will hook up to the injector pump linkage.

Just buy a reed switch the same as it on your brake pedal, and hook it into the unit so when you push the clutch in it disengages the cruise.
I've got an AP60 and the unit works well, like Mark said it's a little jerky sometimes but it keeps speed fairly good. Better than having a sore leg!
The hardest bit was fixing the magnets onto the tailshaft, they kept wanting to fly off at 110km/h.

I used an AP50 from Super cheap when I had my Mav TD 4.2 manual. Worked real well.
I used 2 magnets on the tailshaft at the front. exciter on the crossmember bracket. (even a plate there for it
)
Cleaned the shaft back to bare metal, glued on magnets with locktite cyroanalite glue, wired and covered with a thin smear of araldyte. Never came off.
Fixed cable from vac motor to throttle linkage in parallel to original. (had to drill an extra hole in linkage arm). Looked factory.
Had the press button controller on the dash.

Do you remember where/how you mounted the vacuum motor?bazzle wrote:I used an AP50 from Super cheap when I had my Mav TD 4.2 manual. Worked real well.

The ap50 and 60 have an input for the clutchchimpboy wrote:Do any of you use cruise control in a manual? Just wondering. I find it fine in the auto but am cautious about trying it on a manual vehicle.
You install a brake switch on the clutch pedal and it gives you so many seconds to change gear or the CC cancels
After reading this thread I might dig the AP50 I have had in garage for over five years out.

im installing the cruise cotnrol from an early subaru liberty into my 93 gq petty/lpg.
why? because ive got a parts car, and because from the ones ive used its been the best by far, (i own a subaru liberty turbo).
it uses 2 wires to control the speed, both tacho and speed sensor, has its own vacume tank etc so it dosnt run off the manifold.
how do you guys go with the ones that operate off vacume from the inlet manifold? does it cancel out when you come on boost?

Hey naif, that sounds like my kind of style. I always like grabbing used bits from pick-a-part instead of buying chinese made aftermarket junk... if I can adapt it. What subaru model are you using, can you put up a few pics, and what are the bits and pieces you need to grab off the donor car?
This is not legal advice.
another vote for the AP50 from supercrap! Mine works a treat, installed in an evening on the driveway, all good. Works good, just had to get the cable clamped onto the throttle body in the right spot as a 1HZ needs almost full throttle to hold 100km/h, but its all good now!
I'm running it without the clutch cut out, and I've only bounced it once (forgetting and digging for gears...) I'd love to install a clutch cut out, but I just can't be stuffed... Still, for cheap, its a great piece of gear and makes the highways that much easier.

thats my cruise control in the 40 for long interstate drives.. its not used all the time but its used often enough to give the old right boot a bit of a rest..
call it poor mans cruise control..

you could use a hand throttle set up like Roothy. Also has a chat to some of the diesel parts companies (GIBBS,QDS etc) and see what they stock- you might be able to get a better range than super sh%t

Has Roothy got some weird setup using a bike (pushie) shifter on his gearstick? Any more details on what was done?NCpaj wrote:shorty_f0rty wrote:does your 80 have a hand throttle?
