Did any 4.2 diesel GQs come out with a factory turbo ?
What do the following designations mean?...
RX = 2.8TD?
DX = base spec 4.2D?
ST = mid-spec 4.2P or 4.2D?
Ti = top-spec 4.2P or 4.2D?
What aftermarket turbo would you recomend for a 4.2D?
ANyone have any experience with Berima Diesel Service? Are they the best if you are in the Sydney region?
Any info would be muchly appreciated.

Thanks for that. Looking for a tidy low K 96 / 97 4.2D. White if possible. ST would be nice. It looks like prices range from 25 - 30K.
I drove a '94 ST 4.2D the other day and they were asking 18K for it. I thought it was a little steep considering it had about 220K on it and there were a lot of little probs like electric windows not working, radio stuffed, a lot of wear on the dash / carpets etc.

This is not my field, but in research for my stuff I found something that might serve as a starting point for you.
Dynamic Turbocharger Services www.dynamicturbo.com.au appear to be well represented around the country - their kit for the 4.2D uses Mitsubishi TD05H turbo.

Safari has the best finished kit available for these vehicles (factory appearance). These vehicles respond very well to turboing ( also intercooling) and are a vast improvement over standard. A lot of the other turbo kit builders use components that look rather cheap when the job is complete,( hoses, crossovers etc). If you are thinking of getting really serious power out a gq or using it as a tow vehicle be aware that after early '96 (april build date i think ) Nissan started using lighter pistons in the td42 and extreme EGTs can smoke these pistons. Buy a pre 96 if you want to go really hard. 8)

My mate's old man had a Sprintex supercharger put on his GQ trayback to improve the towing performance. It cracked the 4.2D head within a few months. He had it repaired, and it happened again. Don't know how it's going now but that's my $0.02.

Thanks guys, this is all the sort info I am looking for.
Currently considering either the DTS intercooled or the Berrima diesel kit. I don't know what turbo Berrima like to fit to GQs as they are closed today.
DTS quoted about 2,600 for turbo only fitted and 3,800 incl the intercooler.
Incidently, I am now the proud owner of a 96 GQ 4.2D. I'll pick it up on Thurs.
There will be a heap more Q's to come...

a few of my mates have the switzer turbo from opposite lock and are all very happy with no problems over the years.
i've heard the early motors can take 20 psi but the late ones can only take 16 psi.

They have a few GQs they own themselves running around with superchargers on them. I have heard of no probs so far from these set ups. I know its a bit far to go to have them fit one but they may know someone down your way that can fit one for you.
I thought they did an article on them fitting one in one of the 4x4 monthly mags but cant find it.
The big advantage from a supercharger is they produce boost from the start not up higher in the revs. Also they run a lot cooler because they are engine driven not exhast.

As long as you dont go too big with the turbo and you have the right trim on the compressor and exhaust wheels you shouldnt have too much of a problem with them being laggy. Most of the kits availiable are designed for more towing type torque, ie not laggy, rather than outright HP.
Superchargers are also not as effecient as a turbo.
Thanks Tony, I'll give them a call later this week.
I'm not in a rush to get anything done yet. I would rather do my homework and get the best bang for my buck & application.
I do like the idea of the intercooled turbo though. The supercharger is attractive as well.
Mick, when you say that they are not as efficient, do you mean they suck more fuel or they don't produce as much power?

T03 turbo, change the back plate and dump pipe...works nice...get boost nice and early (suits the 4.2D) works nice...loose a bit of top end.
Also move the the fuel lines...when they are turboed sometimes it heats the hell out of the lines and filters...has been known to cause problems....hey bretto
Also dependng if u can do it youreslf...keep a few $$$ aside to play with the pump settings...
