Oil Catch Can - with a snorkel?

Post by Tom0 »

I was advised recenly that my new GU should have a couple of basic mods done asap once I have my hands on it. I had a read of the Bible (that counter-faculty guide to Patrols) to see what these mods actually were, and they seam easy enough.

One was an egr mod (a small metal plate blocking a hole somewhere)
and the other was an oil catch can (plastic filter thing catching oil that otherwise clogs your air filter).

My question is, as I have a factory snorkel, do I still need the oil catch can?

a catch can is highly recommened and doesn't involve anything to do with snorkels in anyway.

a catch can simply fits on the breather line that goes from motor to air intake, just before the turbo. it catchs the oil mist that comes out of the motors breather.
you will need a filter type catch can. some have used big air compressor water filters with good success but most simply fit filters inside standard catch cans.

I like the idea of using the air line filter/dryer as an oil mist catcher......
They usually have a drain facility and are designed to catch oil mist and water vapor.

What size do you think would be sufficient?

any thing with 1/2" connections.

DO NOT fit 1/2" connectors to a smaller filter, otherwise it will cause a restriction and you will blow oil seals.

for the GU (or anything with maf sensors) i would recommend filtering type rather than coalescing type. ie you want the filter in the catch can between intake and oil in the catch can not the other way around.
get one with manual drain not auto drain.

Legalities aside, you'll find the engine sludges up a lot quicker without positive extraction of blow-by gasses

Wouldn't the catch can increase resistance and cause that too?

only if its to small. got to watch that it can flow enough gas, especially on a motor with lots of blowby. provided it 1/2" in/out on it (stock size) and filter inside it flows well enough its not a problem.

the stock hose has a restrictor about half way through

so if you install a catch can or air filter leave it out but that said any resitance will be minimal anyway
