Winch Locking Up

Post by PajeroSRV »

Hi All,

Got a 12000lb lowmount winch.

When we hook it up and winch, it seems to pull inwards fine.

However, when the load is heavy, the winch comes to a point and obviously can pull inwards no more.

When this happens, the problem that we are having is that when we try to let the winch cable out, the winch won't feed outwards, and we actually have to unload the cable / winch before we can spool out.

This is fine if I am on a flat and winching someone else, but obviously a killer if you are stuck on a hill.

Any suggestions on the cause and the fix for it would be great.

Thanks

Not 100% but it sounds like one of the planetary gears is loose (maybe a broken shaft) and is locking it up.
Just pull it apart and have a look. There isn't much inside them.
Number 11, 14 or 24 on the pic.

Thanks.

Have pulled it apart and no obvious breakages. Each of the cogs in those gears appears to be ok.

I have noticed one issue. I can hand rotate the top cog, and the end cog, but not the middle one.

Can that be an issue?
