scraping noise

Post by da60 »

Hi
My problem is my LWB auto has this wierd scraping/screaming noise (sounds like a dry bearing), only when it's moving. It makes no difference if I am accel/decell or coasting. It has only 2' lift, have checked all wheel bearings, rear diff, transfer case, all brake backing plates, handbrake shoes, the rear tailshaft front uni is a bit tight and there is no play in the splines (and theres no vibe or whiring noises).
Thanks in advance Greg

Is it a GQ? I heard the stall converters stuff up on them. Mines a manual so its not first hand, but it was a mechanic that told me and he owned an auto GQ. Said it was something about the surface coming off some part and clogging up the filter???

Don't know if that helps or not, but its a start.

does the GQ have a transmission brake like the MQ does?

if so, the casing around the transmission break can get buckled, and sand and grit gets into it - this causes a scraping sound for me :P

i used a flat head screw driver and pried the casing away from the brake

i may be completly in left field :P

Thanks for that, It does have a trans handbrake. I removed the drum and cleaned and re-installed. I think the problem is from the rear axle. Has anyone ever has a problem with the pad retaining clips (discs) or a small rock or something got lodged somewhere in there?
