MWB/SWB owners: what suspension do you have???

Post by Bluey »

im after new suspension on my middy, need 2" lift over standard to clear 33's (thats the concensus), mostly onroad bugger all load in it except high mount and bar, will do occaional towing. not sure if should get spring lift or whole new suspension. so JAKE has arb suspension on his middy, and RoscoFJ73 has put in Dobinsons on his. what does everyone else have/recommend????

ps inc SWB because thought suspension mite be similar, ie spring rates etc to get decent ride.

Thanks in advance

Lance when I got mine I was the 1st in WA as they had only just started selling them(aug/sep).They also had to be trucked in from the eastern states but it only took a week from the time I ordered.
Jenkins suspension is an established WA company that has been around since 1920s also sells springs around the $600 mark .They were my original choice until dobinsons low price +quality come along.

Hi Lance.

Shocks: Rancho RS5000's $520 (4) or $792 in the 9000X.

RC leaf-springs (SUP9) steel $990 (4). Supplied as appropriate.
U-bolts (high-tensile) $70.40 (full set)
RC urethane bushes with rifled bores $132 (full set)
RC greaseable shackles and pins $212 (full set)

If you are going to run 33" muds on this vehicle, I also recommend fitting an RTC damper $165.

For each of the components listed, there is a link on our website that details what makes their application so special -

Take our challenge.

At the moment we are running a deal where we bear the cost of insured road freight. Payment can be made by credit card, money order, funds transfer or COD post.

If you would like to order, just let me know.

Regards,

Kirk Barker.

this obviously is from autoalliance, anyone use their stuff? are the leafs ok and what do people think of rancho shocks??? would lean to rs5000 atm if shocks do need to be replaced.

as JAKE said, if have money then get good quality shit. what does this include???? arb/tjm/dobinsons/rancho??? not 4wd systems??? etc. help please!!! dont want to go and buy suspension and find its crap.

cheers
Lance

Lance what sort of offroading do want to do?
A Family sort of stuff camping, sightseeing, exploring tracks trails ect and back to hauling family around on Monday
B Heavy duty stuff spending all day most weekends using full axle articulation
If its A something like mine will more than suffice
If its B then then get something like Jakes keeping in mind there will be additional $$$ upkeep on the vehicle

I dont want to sound as if Im pushing Dobinsons barrow but I checked out their site and read all their quality control blurb and was sold.
In my long journey looking for springs I found out some brands of leaf springs are imported from India an other blast furnaces in SE asia and tend to ride hard and dont last long. Some riffraff mix and match quality leaves with cheap imported ones .
Also look for the military or double wrap where 2 leaves wrap around the shackle in case one breaks (dobinsons have this)
There are also shops out there selling plain brand springs and I suspect these are the imports, dont touch them.
For shockies if your going to go top dollar on the springs then you need a shock to match ,Ranchos,Konis ect ,otherwise there is a multitude of medium priced ones out here that will do.Ive got Powerdown adjustables that were on the vehicle when I got it .According to the PO they are over 18 months old and 2 suspension shops have said they have still got plenty of miles left in them
The greasable shackles I got for $15 are same as standard ones except they are greasable and normally cost $25. Obviously they are not the heavy duty type ,but hell, they will still take you a long way.

Hope I dont sound like Im lecturing but I thought buying springs would be easy .Im glad I didnt have a pocket full of money when I started because most of the shops are bu#l%hi& artsts and im sure I would have gotten ripped off.As jake said there are bargains out there ,you just got to be patient and remember salesmen are NOT your friends until proven otherwise.Dont be scared to tell them you want to pay less as they will often come up with discounts.

nah, thanks Rosco. i like getting non pimped views on this forum, whether from questions i ask or reading other peoples threads.

i'd love to be doing the option B - hard core shit. but lets be honest, i'm a relative newbie to 4wd and hoping to join club soon and start doing some more driving. so realistically i'm at option A, at least till i get better.

i'm going to check out prices on dobinson round here next few days, did go to local spring joint quoted $350ish to reset, $500 to pull springs, reset and put back in. so can save $150 if remove springs myself, but would need chassis stands, prob 4t to get height, thats 200 bucks for 2 pairs.

bumping this to top as will finally (2 weeks) have $ to get suspension fixed.

spoke to local 4wd place (now live pointy end of the state) and quoted old man emu $1920, and apm $1240. apparantly apm made same factory as ultimate ? these prices for springs, u bolts, greaseables

rang largish (adverts etc every month 4wd monthly) melb company who advertise dobinson, but dont have prices!

rang another large company this one does custom stuff (adverts etc every month 4wd monthly) this time in sydney who advertise dobinson, reckoned for leaf trucks better to use ultimate suspension, quoted around $1200. think this was springs only

so, are these brands allright or should i keep calling around for dobinsons. really liked sound of rosco's experience with dobinson, next option would be same as jake ome. if necessary will pay $2k for good brand, but feel better if someone else uses them and they are well known
