Body swaps
Got a 94 ute body I will be putting onto my 90 wagon chassie.
Will that make it still a 90 model or a 94 on paper?
Will I need to get a new tag for the body? It has the original tag on it.

just did a body swap,
its a pain in the a$$ to sort out with everyone cos like normal everyone says its different. I went and found out the 'proper' way to go about it, i had the exact same colour, model, year cab but still wanted it legit. most wouldnt just swapped bodies and kept original plates.
couldnt get blue slip/written off vehicle check until it was enginnered. $750 later for eng cert, took it back and everything theyd told me was bull$hit from the start, long story short, the new bodies VIN was never written off and therefor it is now that vin and as far as the RTA is concerned its the new bodies VIN with the old cars Engine and Chassis under it. The way i saw it was that it is still the old car with a new body, but its all legit and engineered now so no big deal, RTA never looked at it, all done through blueslip at mechanics,
dean.

Technically the body has no numbers so the compliance plates can be removed and fitted to another body with no effect to the roadworthiness, wagon to wagon, wagon to cab chassis is a different story, doing this to your vehicle will need engineering, reclassification and blueslip.
The vehicle will still the same age as what the compliance/chassis number says.
This info comes straight from the RTA.

When i did my bodyswap from WT softtop to NT hardtop, i rang vicroads to tell them the new VIN number and ask if i have to get it verified or anything, and the guy said that since its a vehicle with a separate body and structural chassis, that i dont need to tell them or do anything else, as its the chassis number is all they care about, so, im going with that.
i`v just done ute to wagon well in teh process
1st get engineer to look make shore all ok

I too am putting a 90model ute cab on a 88 wagon chassis. I have spoken to rta about this - i have an unregoed ute with a "cracked chassis"

you need to keep the tags off your wagon body, rebuild your wagon with the new ute cab, and remove tags from ute cab.
go to blue slip place with wagon tags (they show the wagon chassis number), rego papers of your wagon (not compulsory but take them if you have them), and tags from the ute cab.
The blu slip man will need to fill out a "1106 form*" and attach it to the rego application.
on paper it will be a 1990 model, it will have no compliance plates, and its identity will be the chassis number
That is it, too easy. No need to go to an engineer$$$$$$$$$$$$

* A 1106 form is a vehicle no compliance (plate) form, and there are basically 3 boxes the blue slip man needs to tick.
I researched all this before i bought my donor ute. As much as a winge and complain about the rta, the bloke on the tech-enquiries 1800 number was so, so helpfull

having just been through it, in NSW,
let me just say, i tried to keep it simple up top, but here we go,
i was told that the VIN from the Wreck and the VIN from the donor would be irrelevent and a new VIN would be issued but only on paper, not on a plaque.
in reality when i did it, the eng cert was done with the chassis # as this was the only remaining identifier to the original vehicle. so all seemed well,
UNTIL, i tried to sort it out, RTA wouldnt accept the chassis # as an identifier and hence ended up going through under the donor vehicles VIN with the old vehicles engine and chassis #s under that body.
just for the record, you can take the compliance plates off the body, but the VIN # will still be stamped on the body somewhere such as the firewall, the wheel tub or in the rear guard, somewhere, depends on the vehicle.
Thats what i wanted to do, make sure everythign was legit so if i ever get pulled over which is likely given the vehicle involved, then everything would be ok. Now it has been all finished and has been done the way the RTA wanted it, second time round. Not a major issue, just a lot of stuffing around with engineer, mechanic and RTA.
cheers,
dean.

Out of curiosity then, wheres the VIN stamped on a 75 ute cab ? all i can come up with is a name plate on the firewall, im talking about the cab (body)not the chassis number here
new thread i think for this one

Have you actually done this yet?
I spoke to the RTA guy this arvo and he was basically saying the same as you except that I have to get the chassie reclassified as it is a non-load chassie and a ute chassie is a load chassie.

So going from a M.C. class to a N.A. class of chassie.
In other words engineered.

Going by klrevo's experiences it may just be the luck of the draw as to who you get at the RTA when you go in to do the final paperwork.
I will go to the blue slip guy tommorrow and pick his brains, just confuse things further

When I put the ADR approved Hummer body on the MK nissan Chassis they classed it as an ICV (individually constructed vehicle). a new VIN was given which was stamped onto a piece of alloy plate in 5mm stamps ( 7mm if stamped to body or chassis) and screwed to the body, completly engineered for $650, Licenced as a new vehicle , see pic of rego, no make no model

Spoke to a blue slip guy today who rang his RTA fella while I was there.
No engineers needed cause it is a newer body than what the chassie is.
If it was the other way round with an older body it would need a engineers report.
AND they said the ute plates stay with the cab.
As long it bolts straight on its apparntly sweet. No need to have the chassie re-classified as a ute/commercial vehicle
I will be going back to him for the bluey.
Time will tell.
