Jimny clutch cable? problem

Post by JimWhite »

After doing around 300k on sand in my Jimny recently, whenever I put my foot down after changing into 2nd or 3rd it feels like the clutch is still partly pushed in and is being released slowly. If Im not careful the revs go up to around 5 even though the clutch pedal is fully out. After about 10-20 secs it then feels like the clutch slowly is fully released and the revs go back down to around 3. Only happens in 2nd and 3rd. My thoughts were just to tighten the clutch cable, but Im a total mechanical n00b, anything else I should check? Saw the post on where to find the clutch cable on a vitara, is it pretty much the same for a Jimny?

If its slipping, dont tighten the cable, losen it.

There should be free play at the top and bottom of the pedal movement.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I thought the Jimny runs a hydraulic setup?

Sounds like the throw out bearing is sticking on the shaft, salt and sand in there is not a good mix. If you pull back the boot around the clutch fork you can try spraying in some kind of lubricant to unstick it. If that doesn't work then the box will have to come out. If you keep driving it like it is, it will shorten the life of the clutch.

If the clutch feels 'crunchy' when you push it in, may be the thrust bearing...

No crunch. Just feels like someone is pushing the clutch back in after the pedal is released.

I had a stiff clutch pedal in my jim, the pedal felt very heavy, when the cable had no load on it ,it moved fine but spent the $80 or what ever it ws probably less on a new clutch cable and my jim feels like new! If your not sure what your doing, than visit http://www.jimny.se/technical.html and down load the jimny repair manual, than start learning! I'd be checking the easy things first, ie pedal, clutch cable etc than start thinking of Clutch
