2.0L efi into 1.6L efi vitara .. is it possible? cheap?
2.0L efi into 1.6L efi vitara .. is it possible? cheap?
Hey guys,
Has anyone swapped the 2.0L efi engine into a 1.6L vitara before?
1) how much does it cost to get it done professionaly?
2) is it a hard task to do yourself?
I'm talking about the 4 cylinder versions of the non grand 3 door vitara.
Theoretically it should be fairly cheap and easy.. right?
I've checked through the 'bible' on here and havent found much info.
it would also be interesting to swap the v6 into the 1.6 vitara, but i think it is wider so it probably wouldnt work.
cheers
Paul

If thats the J20, have a search. think its been said they are not very good motors for reliability and that.
Think also the J and G series motors also have different bell housing arrangement.

thanks... so its possible, but half the people think the engine is tough, the other half think its unreliable.
BEcause the 1.6 vitaras are like 4 - 7k and the 2L vitaras seem to be 10-11k... hence I could perhaps buy a vitara for 5k and if the engine died, pay another 4k for the install and still be ahead, right?
Cheers

G16b to J20a conversion is my current preferred upgrade (less work than 4agze/sr20 etc). The motor is also a good candidate for turbo/blower fitting. The latest version of the j20a with a turbo runs 164kw (at 5100) and 282Nm (at 3800). Some performance parts are also available such as forged 9.1:1 pistons.
Edit: You can also get high comp pistons for natural aspiration.
Since any motor that goes in will be re-built I’ve been wondering if a j18a stroked up to 2L would be a cheaper build that a original j20a.

What's wrong the the J20A? Other then the timing chain issue, which is solved by using the right grade oil (not the grade used by the idiotic Suzuki mechanics), there aren't any other issues I know of. I had heard of main bearing issues but these have been few and far between.nicbeer wrote:If thats the J20, have a search. think its been said they are not very good motors for reliability and that.

The new SX4, including the rally spec one runs the J20A as well. Granted it's been heavily modded but it is still essentially the same engine.
worked on plenty that siezed heads and cranks, as well as other stuff.but at the end of the day it all comes down to how the engine was treated.

Do you know what caused the seized heads and cranks - lack or servicing etc? I'm interested to know. Or was it due to abuse by the owners?joeblow wrote:worked on plenty that siezed heads and cranks, as well as other stuff.but at the end of the day it all comes down to how the engine was treated.
There's nothing like giving it an oil change every 5k with some good oil.
