Hilux 3L turbo - air intake

Post by sierrajim »

I'm running a Safari turbo and incercooler on my 96 Hilux, i noticed today when we'd just finished servicing it that when reved the intercooler feed pipe sucks in.

This is after the turbo, obviously indicating a vaccum where the should be pressure??

It's running the factory air box with a brand new paper filter, remove the lid of the air box (still with the filter on) no more problem. You can also hear the turbo spool quite easily and quickly.

Question is, what is available thet fits in an already tight engine bay to help my problem? Has anyone had a similar issue on the same engine?

I'll call Safari on Monday to see what they have to say. The kit has been on there for at least two owners before me so its not a warranty issue. In the meantime i'll leave the air box lid off.

Spoke with the previous owner, he tells me he had a Uni Filter in place and it seemed ok. Might go down that path before i have to start re arranging an engine bay.

Was more just curious to see if anyone else has had the same. If it wasn't for stumbling across it we wouldn't have known. :?

OK, update.

Have checked turbo operation and all is working well, max boost 9PSI.

Spoke to safari, thet don't do tech??? They said to call ARB, no one had any idea of any others having this problem.

Have space issues in the engine bay, not sure if another air box (donaldson or similar) will fit. So i've been looking at other filters, then read http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic65854-0.php

So now i have no simple solution. Has anyone tried to fit a Donaldson box in the engine bay of a Hilux?

i actually think its one of the larger ones that lays flat in the engine bay and not on edge like our 3l's, and is about 350mm diameter by 100mm thick from memory. this could be the new 5l's im thinking of but there is an idea and they are still mounted passenger side from what i can remember..
Cheers, Chris

yeah the hilux's and playdo's have a 1kz-te aswell, but that picture is from a surf... ill put money on it.

mine is a 93 surf, and the ONLY thing differant in that pic to what my engine bay looks like, is the brand of batteries and the vehicle color. and mine may be slightly dirtier :D

Your both right, they were used in the KZN130 & KZN185 Surf's as well as the early Playdo's (KZN185 chassis and running gear with different body).
AFAIK no aussie sold hilux had a 1KZ-TE from factory only 5L-E (3 litre, ECU controled fuel pump, no turbo).

As for the Snorkel, check under the external snorkle head that a filter thingy is not in there or something else as can restrict flow and may be the issue.
I remember someone mentioning a reducer there as well for petrol engines or something ??

The air box in the pics for the 1KZ, is the same as mine on a 2.4 TD if it helps.

Sorry Dougster, Aussie delivered Hiluxes did have 1KZ-TE fitted (KZN165R). I think they came out between 1999 and 2004

Cheers guys,

I'll take a look around and find one of the Surf boxes, worst case i'll make another stainless snorkel and sell f\off the Safari one.

As a side note there is no K&N Filter element available for the 3L (2.8ltr) Hilux air box. Only the Unifilter who's website pricing must be out of date, the site says $90, they want $120 :bad-words:

Both K&N and Uni filters are available for the Surf box. The thread on the filtration may end up with me running a K&N in the Surf air box with a pre cleaner/sock thing on the end of the snorkel. If that doesn't work i'll work out how to fit the Donaldson.

Post up pics as i go.

Yes, canned the idea of the uni filter.

K&N for the factory 3L air box, they didn't list one on their site, only for the surf box. I may stand corrected.

I have the same thing but my surf box is back a bit more from the battery.
My battery sits on a pirahna battery tray; had to cut one peice off it to make it fit but it works great.

On the surf's they have a battery tray spot welded in (exactlt the same as the one on the right hand side...
All i did was drilled out the spot welds that hold it in place and then tack weld it into my engine bay through the holes i had just drilled out... easy

Cheers again guys. Had an air box fitted with a K&N roll up with our friendly mower man (cheers HG).

No longer do the intercooler lines suck in under throttle

It's now also got LPG injection so we'll see how it runs tomorrow afternoon.
