The transfer case on my R151F gearbox whines in all the gears. Not too worried about it. However, the nosie, especially when on the highway, is beginning to be a 'pain in the ears'.
What can be done?

Transfer case whines....

This depends on what is causing the whine. First pull both the drain plugs and check for contaminated oil or metal stuck to the magnets on the drain plugs.gotoy wrote:Good point, could be gearbox and/or the transfer cases.
What do I need to do to rectify the whine?
Most likely cause is either a damaged bearing or damaged gear surfaces usually caused by oil contamination or lack of oil. Contamination could be metal particals, water or mud.
If they are low on oil sometimes a decent oil replacement and some molly based additives can conciderably quiten the noise but first pull the drain plugs and let us know what you found.
Its also possible its comming from your rear diff. And you are getting harmonics comming up through the rear tailshaft and through the box and Tcase. Without hearing it myself its very hard to tell.
Input shaft bearing in gearbox is common problem in G52 box as I have 3 that need this repair I guess R151 may have similar problem. If making noise in every gear it has to be an input output transfer diff etc as these are spinning all the time and not engaged individually or loaded individually as with gear bearings. If the noise sounds like it is coming out next to you in the cab it is a good chance it maybe this, cant tell without listening to it, but it sounds like your box may need bearings.
Thanks guys.
The whining sounds appear to be comming direct from the gearbox or transfer case, or both. Also, its every gear hi or lo. The box does become a little hot and the heat can be felt from the cabin floor directly above and also on the gearstick.
Apart from the above, the box functions normally, and no gears jump out, hi or lo.
