As you do, sitting with a beer and ponder the meaning of yen.... or zen or WTF it is.

Can the P38 Borg-Warner 44-62 transfer case be fitted with a locking CDL and is it a strong box?

Not that I will be, but just wondering if it can be locked, and if so would it be a good box for rovers that are fitting mog portals.

I thought they were viscous ? An LT230 would be a better transfer i reckon especially with the aftermarket parts available for them.

I believe they are oposite to an lt230, drive on the left side instead of te right. Maybe thats why he wants one. If I recall from a pic the viscous is fitted on the end of the centre diff, so it may be possible to make a locking sleeve that would fit in its place and an operating lever, but wouldnt be a cheap job. But I may be wrong on that as I have only seen a pic of one.

Yeah, thats exactly it. LH drop unlike the LT230.

That's quite interesting about the viscous arrangement though bigbad. I'll have to try to find an exploded diag of one and see what the possibilities are. As said though, it's just out of interest.

The other thing that made me wonder about it's strength, was when reading about it's servicing, it seemed the drive chain was a replaceable item in that transfer, which made me wonder about it strength.

I have a P38, never had to do any work to the gear box or transfer case so I cant tell you what you want to know but an intersting thing if its of any consiquence is the gear box selector and the the transfer case selector are one and the same, ie no seperate knobs!

But the P38 is bloody good off road, better than my 89 was!

Just looking through that doc, I'll be really surprised if nobody currently manufactures a locking mechanism for this transfer. It would be very straight forward for a machinist as it looks like it requires a locking dog in place of the viscous unit and an activation fork like that on a maxi difflock or an LT95. Just looking at the pics, my concern would be the size of the rear output shaft where it goes into the viscous unit, but that is based on the diagrams and not any measurement.

Had the wife's P38 on the hoist today, changieng shock rubbers, looks like the VC is siezed :cry: Wonder how long till something breaks :D

Cloughys a mechinal genius no doubt, he just forgets some of us arnt quite so mechanicaly minded :oops: , and for me its only a cse of knolledge when I have to do the work, which fortunatley for me, I havent yet :) . I respect the man and his knoledge, he just needs to remember some of us only have mechanical apptitude of sloths. ;)

no pics yet. and it's a little muddy now.
160k. 17k and i think it's in near perfect condition for it's age.(every thing works)
just needs some decent rubber under it and i just happen to have a new set of ET2's in the shed :twisted:

I just put a set of cooper sts on mine they are great, but I have issues on entry level on full lock. I also need to replace on of the blend motors. You know they thing that sh!ts me, I cant get a Arb bar for it :bad-words:

i heard some where you can modify a disco bar to fit.
i'll look into it later when i finish some of the other projects i started.

Got them through Ryan at 4bs great tyres so far.

Ive heard that the Disco bad can be altered but Im concerend about insurnace issues with the SRS airbags!
