GU turbo Upgrade

Post by AC »

Hi All,
looking at upgrading the existing GU turbo on my 4.2 diesel. i know that there companys that do an upgrade such as denco?? who offer a bolt on upgrade. The other options is to replece it with something like a garret dico potato.

I am after which option is the best considering that I am not trying to build a 150rwkw weapon

thanks alan

If its still in standard form

Have you adjusted and fuel and boost?

If not new turbo will help a bit however need to choose the right spec.

tomahawkracefab also now supply turbo's to suit 4.2 diesel with custom configurations not just a disco potato with different trims.

By upgrading, what are you looking for? Great low down torque with good power. You need to probably drive a vehicle that is already done and decide if thats what you want.

We use Garrett bb units with great success, look factory once they are finished. Sizing is critical. If it is not done correctly you will have lag or no higher end power.

mine had Motson's stage II on it when i bought it - what that means exactly... who knows - even Motson's is pretty tight lipped about it!! But anyway it seems to go better than 2 mates that have the same engine, with same km's and same mods as mine.

Apparently it is either a replacement turbo or honed and/or smoothed/rebuilt factory turbo with a tune. Match that to a 3"dump and mandrel straight through exhaust and it gooes pretty good. (even pushing 35 muds on std ratios)
GU 4.2 TD Garrett BB Hi-flow, M8274 + Bells & Whistles with plenty of fruit still on the list!

In your opinion, What would be your choice of turbo to suit a GU 4.2. Am after quick spool up for towing with low to mid power, Want it to pull hard up to 3500- 3800rpm

I've got one of Andys Garrett setups on mine. Excellent power spread for my use. Suprises a lot of people off the line from the lights. Its not going to beat the SS Taxi, but plenty of others are shocked.

The car is amazingly different compared, thats towing campertrailer, or the bike trailer or not. Nice and torquey for hills and great to be able to drive around and leave it in 5th.

You need to work out your budget first off, what sort power levels you want (90kw/120kw/160kw/200kw etc), and same with torque.

This is one of Andys Dyno's.

Go and have a word to him at the shop.
Discuss your needs, budget, and go from there. I am sure you would be happy with any work he does, I have been.

Some early sheets on mine. Hoping to get it back next week for a tune.

Benny, what bogged has on his is the best. We have not had another vehicle come though our doors to be dynoed that has bettered it for low down response and drive ability.

He also has 3.9 diffs, the dyno graph he is showing is with 31" desert duellers and steel rims. If you have 4.1 diffs its better again.

Bogged results are achieved with the standard i/c, injection pump (as long as it has an 11mm head and rotor fitted) and air box. The turbo also can be run up to 25 psi if needed and still be in its efficiency zone.

Bogged's setup sounds pretty damn good, would there be any further gains from fitting a larger top mount cooler?

We use the MTQ set up for both exhaust and compressor, re time the pump, run 15 psi boost, and use our own dump pipe and exhaust, and normally see 135-140 rw kw .

Will look up torque tomorrow.

Actually we are doing another one tomorrow.

I have a 4.2 turbo non intercooled ute and want to know the same thing whats best ??? I run an earthmoving business and am always carrying 1/2 a ton around so its a little sluggish on the hills wanting good low-mid range power and torque. Also what is the ballpark price for a turbo rework or upgrade???
Cheers John

Work out how much you wanna spend? 1000 - 7000?
Work out where you wanna end up. 100kw - 200kw... how much torque do you want in the end?

Basic start
stage 1: Exhaust, boost and tune.. gets u around 90-100...
stage 2: intercool and retune. gets you round 110-115 - depending on the cooler
stage 3: Different BB turbo and skys the limit - different cooler 160-200+ kw

Obviously you're not going to give away your secrets, but do you alter the pump timing from standard aswell as the fuel adjustment?

If you are talking GU 4.2/2.8 to GU 4.2/2.8 yes you can. They are the same intercooler/framework. Pipework MAYBE different on the 2.8 to the 4.2

Tryed that, couldn't close the bonnet. Used a complete GU TD42T kit, there is not enough room between the inlet manifold and bonnet at the front.

Yes they have been done but you need a body lift.

Are the bonnets different then...?
