Seen a few for sale for high 20's...no bids...one was on ebay and only had 170000kms....no bids...because for that money you can buy lots like 2003 gu t6...but hey, try and find a multivalve 80 for sale..they are thin on the ground....seen about 4 inthe last 6 months. The t/d 100 is the new hot car to buy...you can get one of them for as low as 33...check out ebay now for the 2001 gxv.

The engine itself has a much better design. the 12 valve TD (1990-1994) had a poor design that saw the big end bearings fall apart and break very very often. so much so that toyota will repair any problems of the nature at part cost ONLY.

With the 24 valve it has better economy, less emissions, and the bearing problem is gone.

And just fyi for anyone i paid 10 grand for my '97 4500 gxl manual, it had 289k on it but was in much better condition than ones i saw with half that for more money.

hope this helps.

under 11 litres/100km in stock trim.

add exhaust, boost controller and tweak the pump for 400+Nm and 150ish kW, with 10.5l/100km if you control the urge.

add intercooler for 500Nm and 170kW.

high flow turbo for 600Nm and 200kW.

all without internal modification.

mine has 240,000km and still manages consistent 11.5l/100km driving to work every day on 35's, 5" lift, all round barwork, winch, rear tyre carrier, baby seats and half a box of biscuits mashed into the back seats.
I have a boost controller at 15psi (12.5 is stock boost so barely overboosted), pump tweaked a little bit, and 2.5" mandrel bent straight through exhaust. They are spendy to buy but pretty cheap to feed. you can sample your oil and extend the change interval to 10 - 15,000km. It has see the high side of 60km/h a few times with no apparent ill effects, it is a great motor with heaps of urge and fantastic economy.

the 12 valve uses about 10% more fuel and runs out of breath at about 3000rpm.

it is still hard to justify the high price but if you compare them with similar age/km patrols etc there is no comparison.
