In all honestly I dont know a hell of a lot about them. But I do know that they are worth less that a petrol without lpg for a reason. I also looked at them before I got my terrano and was (by several mechanics) told to stay the hell away from them.

In saying that, im sure there are guys/gals out there who have had a great run out of them.
Jabber gone. Now have 98 nissan terrano and a 94 4.2ldiesel rv troopy on 33s slowly getting the fancy bits. How the hell do I change my user name?

depends what you want to do with it? I have a GQ 2.8 and have been very happy with it. It has been a fantastic and reliable car for me. It's got 230,000 on the clock and has never let me down.

As bogged wrote, there is plenty of info on them on the patrol4x4 forum.

ive just bought a 98 2.8td, its got a 2.5 inch lift and a 2.5 exahust, it sounds mad and goes pretty well, its a little gutless up some hills but nothing droping it down a gear wont fix, if it doesnt have the exahust modded on it then get that done other wise u wont be going any where fast. other then that they are a great truck and i love it, best car ive ever owned

They are gutless if your going to mod them for 4x4ing, 33's end up taking alot of power way, and if you want 35's then your going to need some reduction gears for 4x4ing, if your going to use it as a tour car or just a daily driver, or even very light 4x4ing then they are great. Being a 6 cylinder they are pretty hearty but do their their share of problem, but are a much better option than a 3L ZD30 based GU, a 2.8 may give you troubles, a 3L GU WILL give you troubles, its a certainty

Maybe you should hang a roll of toilet paper around your neck to wipe your chin, since you like talking out your ar$e

They are like most motors, have been known to have their problems, but nothing like the 3.0
They do lack the torque of the 4.2, which I miss, but are suprisingly good on road, and a chip and exhaust do wonders for them.

All depends on what you intend to do with it

i tow a 18' plate alley boat to and from brissy its 1650kgs it will do 130 if i want but 105 is a good speed ive got 33s, 4" lift, roof rack and its always about 15 / 16 ltr,s per 100 i had on and off problems with hot starts and then cold starts it all turned out to be the injector pump ..

so if you do check it starts when hot if not get em to rebuild the injector pump and check the back of the head for oil leaks between the head and block cause they warp.. both these problems seem to be around the 200,000 ks mark
other than that do the exhuast get the timing plate changed and u will enjoy .. mine has 120 kw on 33s just from tuning boost exhaust and whips my mates 4.2 tds toyota and nissans..

geez thats a bit nasty. i have had absolutely no experience with these 2.8. oh no hang on just remembered. been in the motor industry since 1992 and selling parts for 6 yrs now. had 3 friends who bought 2.8's one exploded after owning it for approx 2 weeks in a gu, one 97 model gq was wrecked out early this year in really good nick because he could only get $1500 trade in on it on his new patrol (nissan didnt even want it) 3rd one is my bro- in laws gu who lives with us. put a set of 32s on it and went g/house. the 2.4 hilux 0n 35s had twice the pulling power of it.would have 2-3 calls per month chasing heads, turbos and front pulleys of em mod it all you want, all you do is shorten the life of a very average offroad eng. if they were that great of a donk they would race at least one in australia.
fawk me even a lada has done a winch challenge series up here but no 2.8s. probably a great shopping trolley and beach truk and definatly more comfortable than my td42 89 gq. but give me 500000 kms of reliable driving over air con.

but thats my $5 worth. each to their own. if we were all the same we would have white falcons or silver commondores.

suit on.

Sorry, was suppossed to have the ;) , not the

Was meant to be a light hearted comment, like your original

I agree, they have their place, and I would have a 4.2 any day over the 2.8 especially if its going to be modded for off roading or used for towing

They are probably comparable to the 2.4t Toyota motors, some will get a good run, but there are a lot that dont last, but I would have one over a 3.0
