Glow plugs not glowing and -ve batt. terminal clamp smoking.

Post by Rough60 »

help me please sparkys,
the glow plugs in my hj60 either click on and then straight off or doesn't click on at all.
every thing else works fine, lights, stereo, etc.
Also the negative terminal clamp smokes immediately when the ignition is turn to the start position.
are these 2 probs related, and where should I start looking, all ready checked wiring and connections, but what about relays or solinoids and how to test them.
cheers luke.

Remove the Glow plugs and check for continuity, they should return a 1 Ohm resistance (correct me if that figure is incorrect) Also check the glow plug resistor in the manifold if it has one - haven't seen a 2H in a long time, so I'm not really sure on the setup. Go to Autobarn or similar and buy a gregory's manual for your rig. There will be a lot of useful info to help you.

Best to change your glow plugs together as they need equal resistance in the system to function to spec.
Built, not bought.

maybe an easy solution

I might be lucky, the -ve battery terminal clamp had slightly melted in my attemp to start it  , got some 'start ya bastard', kicked over straight away parked in shade, its hot in sydney today, beers going down well. Anyway when I took off the melted -ve terminal clamp, it was cracked underneth and the earth cable which is original (19 yrs old) was partly broken and pretty badly oxidized. Stripped it back, cleaned it up and bobs your uncle, works great. I'm hoping that there was just too much resistance at this connection. I'll pick up a new earth cable tommorow anyway.
Thanks to those that suggested stuff.

One other question, does thee 2H have a temp sensor that stops the glow plugs working if the engine is up to temp???

Cheers,
Luke.

Sounds like you found the fault. A small amount of resistance at the terminal will be enough to cause it to smoke up due to the large amount of current being drawn.

Most likely everything else will be OK.

My old motor did that, and it turned out to be a combination of low battery (flat) and the 'fuel control relay'. That relay is located in the r/h/f kick panel, and mine was rusted to the sh!thouse from water leaking down from the w/screen. Pulled it apart and wire brush/CRC it, and bingo better starts.
